Well, I'm going to cut the grooves in my plug. After all, the taps you buy for 200 dollars have LARGE grooves in them for this purpose. And if it doesn't work better I'm out 4 bucks. Besides kinda hard getting down in that manifold hole with a cutoff. I used a sawsall with hacksaw blades to cut the old pipe, just one cut and they came right out after working the 1/2 inch I left protruding.

anyone know what the size is for a super w6? my exhaust pipe has lost its groves as well. I tried jb weld, another version and was planning on going to the weld shop tomorrow to spot weld it into place. Will this pipe you find at Lowe's in the plumbing department really work?
Thanks
joel

should be the same as an M or Super M 2 inch. A black iron nipple from any hardware will work, the originals are just water pipe.

2-inch pipe is 2-3/8 inch outside diameter.

I had local fab shop make up three or four exhaust pipes and thread one end. Bought a couple of steel pipe plugs, they have the square protrusion for tightening. Cost 5 dollars.I wire brushed the manifold first, shot it good with PB Blaster, let it sit for a day. Then turned the pipe plug in, moving it both directions as I went, using it LIKE a tap. That did the job on three old manifolds. Who needs a totally like new manifold and pipe for an H?

If you cut 4 1/8 inch grooves with a cut off wheel perpendicular to the threads, to slightly below depth of the threads, this will give the rust&crud a place to go when reforming the old threads.

I need to do this to both by 400s. Did you put the slots in the pipe plugs? Wouldn't the manifolds be age and work hardened to the point that the pipe plug would be ineffective? I'll definitely try it. Someone once said he would try anything once. Will it take more than one plug to complete one manifold?

I have found tool rental stores willing to rent them for $15 for 4 hrs. The size is as the Tractor Vet indicates below. They are Pipe thread sizes which are measured (approximately) on the inside of the pipe. The actual tapered part of the cutting edges will be larger than the indicated size.
Use a small wire wheel to preclean the manifold so the tap enters on the old threads precisely.

Harbor Freight has a set of three pretty reasonable and I find they work just fine for chasing existing threads. At least they worked real well on my 400 and M. Roger

learned this from an old IH mechanic. Just buy the new pipe that screws into the manifold. The new threads will cut into the carbon buildup in the old thread grooves enough to get it started good, don't over tighten yet. Run the engine to warm it up and retighten. As you use the tractor will need to watch and retighten as needed. Amazing how well this has worked on manifolds that looked hopeless.

Massy, around here the old time plumbing supply shops will loan one (with a deposit). You will need to buy a nipple any way so ask a round.

You can go to the hardware store and buy one for $200. Or watch eBay. I bought mine for cubs through 450s for $8 each.

Used a 2 inch pipe tap on my H and 300. I was fortunate, and got to borrow one, they are available at industrial tool or plumbing supply facilities.

Hard to believe that you could get a 2 1/2" tap in where a 2" pipe goes.
