M was running fine, parked it, and next day it would not start. No noise, wouldn't even turn over. I re-wired and replaced the starter switch. Wires were bad, had exposed wires so I figured ther was a short somewhere. Still won't start or even turn over. Lights work, volt meter says it's getting juice to starter. Is my starter bad? Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Problem solved!!! I cleaned the connections, pulled the starter and had it looked at- no problems with the starter. When I reconnected the starter, I tried to once more to start the tractor, it made that clunk noise that the starter was trying to engage and then nothing. Put tractor in 5th and gave it a little tug with my 8N and then tried starting it again, fired right up.

Attach one jumper cable to the starter bolt where the heavy battery cable [insulated] is connected, hold starter switch closed, and scratch the other end of the jumper along a convenient bolt or other place on the frame of the tractor. If you get a LARGE amount of fire[ sparks] from doing this, you probably have starter problems. If not much sparking, suspect a bad connection at starter switch, battery posts[connections], or ground cable connection at frame of tractor.

As indicaed below, I thingk brushes are the issue.
There is no grace period they just stop working.
A solid rap with a plastic faced hammer will usually give one or two emergency starts out of them, but rebrush and rebush is probably in order.

Make sure all of your connections are clean and tight. I have the same problem with my H about once a year.

Make sure your starter gear is not caught on the ring gear, do this by rolling the tractor with it in road gear. Or the brushes could be worn out or the spring that holds them.
