Yep, thats right. Sold today at a farm auction near Mound City, Mo.

Sale was mostly household items with just this tractor, 4 row planter, 2 wagons w/hoists, and a truck that didn't run.

1954 SMD TA, good tin but rusty, good rims, very worn & weathered tires, Behlen power steering (ugly), NF, hoop & swinging draw bar, good TA & IPTO. Ending bid $10,400

Auctioneer had a starting bid in his pocket at $4,000. One or two other bidders to $5,500. Then one bidder on the phone to an independent rep. and a very big collector from Wathena, KS. The telephone bidder jumped the bid a couple of times trying to blow the collector off but that didn't work. Very obvious that the collector came prepared to pay whatever it took for him to take the tractor home, and he did.

If this is what they are always going to bring that I guess that I will never have one.

FYI

Sounds like lots of people arent up to the latest on what some tractors are bringing. If someone is willing to pay that what do we care. SMTAD sold for over 18,000 in OHIO year ago as was reported. Neighbor has G JD says will bring 18-20,000 B FARMALL north of here went for over 7,000 if someone wants them remember it takes two to bid on the sale.

For that much it should be in top shape with good paint and no rust or anything broken, no matter how rare it is.

They don't all go quite that high. I watched one sell at a an auction last summer in eastern KS for $2600. I didn't go to buy it, but now I wonder if I should have. I didn't go to this sale, but from the sounds of it they were probably in similar condition. But then that's the way auctions go.

You might think it is to high but I wouldn't take that for mine. I'll bet it will still be a better investment than most places people put their money. I like the idea that mine has returned about 5 times what other investments have. It is a way more fun investment too I can go out & drive it around.

John: Hard to understand that one, there were actually fewer each 400s and 450s build than SMTAs, yet the SMTA commands the price. Think about it, roughly 25,000 to 28,000 SMTA and roughly 15,000 of each 400 and 450.

Much the same with the little Farmalls of that era as well. Roughly 100,000 SA built, less than 15,000 each of 100 and 130 and about 75,000 - 140s yet the SA and 140 command better prices. 140 is the outragous one in this case.

31806 400's, 18035 450's, so there were actually nearly 50000 400's and 450's combined, compared to 26924 MTA's, none of these models can be considered rare -- again, though, it was the MTA that started it all -- not the usefulness or numbers produced of the individual tractors. Remember, tractor collection does not have to make sense. If it did I wouldn't have 7 Farmalls/Internationals, and only 2.5 acres.

CNKS, think your low on farmall 400 and 450 produced.Without looking up around 40000 400 and 450 near the MTA total.

My typo for the 450, correct is 18305, so, 50111 400/450 combined. 26924 MTA's. These are Guy Fay's numbers.

Don't want to argue, just want to get correct so we will both know.I was refering to farmalls Gas, diesel,LPG and high crop total.Looked at Guy Fay
Data book if thats what your using.Think theres a typo, just above the 18305 produced it lists 17852
for 56 and 57 and 7737 produced 58.If my math is correct that makes 25589 total.

Guy says the production numbers and the serial numbers often do not coincide, perhaps because they are not always consecutive. BUT, if you subtract 500 from the last 450 serial number you get 25567 450's produced instead of the 18305 Guy lists as the total, so it is apparantly wrong. If you add his production numbers you get 25589, which I suppose is in the range of error when Guy tried to sort out all the data. (All this really doesn't relate to Big John's original post). In Guy's defense it is very hard for any writer to keep everything straight. Been there, attempted to do that.

Charles: Thanks on that, I really hadn't looked at those production numbers in awhile.

Secondly, I always figure using 3 tractors to plow my snow, mow my grass and plant my garden, total 2 acres at most and 400' of drivway, or collecting which ever you wish to call it, still makes more sence than pulling.

Have no fear you are still considered to be sane.

Hugh, I think you missed that this was a diesel. Only 2705 built.

John: I realize that, I expect the diesel percentage is probably a bit higher in the 400 and 450. My real point here is whether it be gas or diesel 400 and 450 sell for much less than SMTA.

I had a guy offer me a finders fee to find him a SMDTA, at least until I told him what he'd have to pay. That kind of backed him off. Then he told me he was just try to smoke a couple of guys in antique pulling, thinking TA would make the difference. His two competitors had a Cockshutt 40 and SMD respectively. I suggested he buy a 560 diesel for less than half the money, he would be in same weight class and could turn the 282 up to about 90 hp and smoke the H@## out both of them. Probably wouldn't matter whether TA was working or not. Anyhow, I never did get a finders fee, and I really don't know what he is pulling with.

Perhaps a little high for an unrestored one, but it is a diesel. With the listings on the internet, a collector in the market for one is going to find it, and is willing to pay whatever it takes. I will likely never own an MTA, because the prices are out of my range. The six letter series I have I think were very reasonable, ranging from 650 to 2250 (Stage 2 Super H). Other than the MTA's, I don't think prices for most older Farmalls are out of line, at least not in this part of the country. Most can be had for less than $2000.

Yea sir. The SMD TA is now Officially out of the hobby side and into the collector corner.
I will stick to my 400's for $2000 and have a better tractor.

Collectors don't buy them to use as you do, so to the collector a 400 is not a better tractor, it is a "run of the mill" tractor that is worth far less to him than an MTA. Collectors have different perspectives than actual users. An extreme example is a Rumley Oil Pull, worthless to actually use in modern times, except for a demonstration, but very valuable otherwise. The MTA may be in that class someday. It is a unique tractor, in that it pioneered the IH IPTO and TA, and although the production numbers do not class it as rare, it was only made for one year.

One good thing is. A SMTA is about the only old Farmall you could get your money back for doing a rebuild on.

I know how you feel John. I have wanted a W-4 for years, I just cannot afford the unrealistic high prices some of these guys are asking. The prices will keep going up as long as there is a sucker with deep pockets to buy them. Charles
