If I convert my M from 6V to 12V will I need to replace the original ammeter (354473R91)?

If your battery is in good shape, you will have no problems. We have a SMTA which was converted over 20 years ago, which still uses the stock ammeter, and have had no problems. When starting, leave the throttle at near idle until the ammeter starts to taper off on the charge. then you can advance the throttle to any position without trouble. When the charge rate doesn't taper off within a few minutes, it is usually a sign that the battery is getting weak, or that it has taken lots of cranking to start the engine[large battery draw].

The original ammeter will work fine. Note however that if the new generator (or alternator) is rated for more than 20 amps output the ammeter will peg on the charge side after startup. But this won't hurt it. (I've had a 61 amp alternator pegging the stock ammeter on my Super M for nearly 30 years - it still works fine.)

And as janicholson points out, if you're switching to negative ground you'll need to swap the connections on the two ammeter terminals - otherwise it will read "backward".

Some thing you can do to change the range of the A-meter. Put a resitor parallel (shunt) with the meter. If you put a shunt of the same resistance as your A-meter you get double range. eg. if stock meter goes to 30A, now it reads till 60A.

The resistor must be the same style and near zero resistance of the shunt across the inside of the original meter. The scrapping of a different meter will make one available. The accuracy does not matter too much, but the capacity to carry current does.

If you use an alternator the amp gauge should read to 10-15% higher than the rated output of that alt. (usually stamped into the case).
The charging current can heat up and ruin a lesser meter. If using a 12v generator from IH/Delco, you can.
To switch ground to Neg (using an alt), reverse polarity of the amp gauge to keep it indicating in the correct direction.
Let us knoe the outcome,
JimN
