I am putting new pistons and sleeves in my farmall h and am wondering about the piston pin bushings, after measuring mine i found them to have an average of about .005 give or take a few tenths. my service manual says NEW pin and bushing clearance to be .0007 from factory. I'm wondering what the average joe would allow before putting in new bushings

I never put new pistons and pins on old bushings as before long she will develop a knock and that new pin will be junk .

Your post is unclear. Did you write that correctly .005? Is that the pin to bush clearance? If so you've answered your own question. Replace them. If you meant .0005 beyond the factory .0007 you could probably run them but why would you? They would be close to clattering. The motor is apart. The bushings are cheap. The process at a machine shop is to press out the old, press in the new, and hone to size. For very little money you will have it back to factory or better and good for 30 years. You should have them check the rods are not cracked, bent, or twisted, the big ends round. They can correct most things, not all. They can do this pretty cheap for you. I would do it regardless. I probably wouldn't even take time to measure them.

Boy do I need to find a new machinest. My guy charges $18 each pin or $108 for my 706 Gas pins.
I didnt think that was cheap.

Hello Kelly C,
I follow your posts very closely, but very seldom post at all to yours or others posts. To press the bushings out for a six cylinder engine and press new ones in takes about an hour (give or take) with an arbor press. However, to hone out the bushings to fit each pin correctly fit each pin and bushing for each rod on a hone/reamer can take a very long time. I know it seems like a lot of money, but it's not if you think about what time it takes to precision fit each pin to the bushing in the connecting rod. This is just my opinion, take it for what it's worth,

Jim

Folks can't work for nothing these days. How much you think is fair. You can probably get it done cheaper if you want to shop and research and then your time and money is going somewhere else. Did you supply bushings? If so OK maybe you are right but guy has a shop, overhead equipment etc., etc... How much is fair tractorvet?

I provided the bushings.
So how long does it take to press out 6 bushings and run a hone through? 1 hr? $108 hr or 2 hrs? $54 hr I bet it took less than 30 mins to do it.
I dont know. Making a profit is ok with me. just seemed high to me.

Sounds like they didn't really do you any favors. It's real difficult to say. Lots of variables.
Some shops, it just don't pay to supply parts. Seems like maybe $12 a rod would be fair. Did they do any other work on the rods? You might try to get phone quotes on jobs like this to see waht gives, then dicker with your shop or find another shop.

With that much clearance the engine had to be noisy. Should be .0005" with new bushings. Hal
