I just got my new rebuilt M home and I can't get it to start. The hauler drove it on his trailer two days ago but it would not start when he got to my place. Its a 48 model with a mag. The engine was recently rebuilt and the 6 volt system works hard to spin the engine. How can I test to be sure the mag is firing? Also why is it that when I try to jump start directly to the starter the starter does not turn--only get sparks yet the starter turns fine from the battery on the tractor? I wanted to spin the starter with a 12 volt battery ( after disconnecting the 6 volt of course).
Thanks for all help

Brownie Has some fine points. I would ad that the distinction between booster cables with 6 or even 10 gauge wire in very thick insulation, and jumper cables with 2 gauge or 0 gauge is dramatic. Boosters are not even good to boost (leaving them hooked between same volt batteries with the engine running) because they get so stiff they crack.

Hawling a traqctor can substantially rile up the junk in the fuel tank. I would check the flow at the carb.

Just a guess --- maybe the jumpers aren't heavy enough or not good enough connections. As far as the spark check, if you have a crank, use it to turn the engine to check for a spark. you should hear a click as you crank the engine, indicating that the impulse is working in the magneto. One spark should occur at one spark plug lead for every 4 "clicks" [impulses]. This will tell you if the spark is o.k. or not. Did the tractor run before hauling it?
