The tach (I think that is what it is called, on left side of dash panel, shows road speed in various gears at various throttle speeds) on my 300u doesn't work and I would like to fix it.
I don't know the first thing about them like how they are run and what they are run off of, etc. Where and how do I start checking for the problem, and what is a good source for the parts?
Thanks for reading and for any help

I'd check the cable first. They are usually broken. You can get a universal cable at any auto parts store for around 15 - 20 dollars.

Jimer:

There's a guy in the Grand Rapids, MI area who sells rebuilt tachs for the 300U on eBay every now and then. They usually go for something like $55 or $60, if I remember right. I can't vouch for his work because I haven't seen them personally, but it's an option you may want to consider.

You have either a bad tach,a broken tach cable or a bad gear drive at the base of the distributor housing. The tach can be bought new as can the drive cable. The drive gear can probably be gotten new from Case/IH or picked up used (300/350 models).

Jimer,
Three years ago when I had the tack on my 450 diesel rebuilt, I had to purchase the distributor drive gear from the Bates Corp in Indiana. My Case IH dealer said they no longer are available. But I think you can still get new tach cables from Case IH.

I got a new tach cable from a local speedometer shop. I think it cost about $55.
