Whining noise in Super M live pump

I have noticed as of late a whining noise coming from my M&W live hydraulic pump on my 53 Super M. There seems to be plenty of oil in the reservoir so I don't believe low oil is the issue. Could cold weather thicken the oil (30 wt)and make it difficult to circulate and cause the noise? It makes the noise whether I'm using the hydraulics or not and seems to go away after a while.

I'm not sure where you live, but yes, cold weather will thicken oil especially 30W.

I'd suggest going to Hy-Tran or some type of hydraulic fluid instead of the 30W.

I'm in southern Illinois and it has been a little cold here lately. I use the 30 wt oil since it is called for in the Farmall specs for the belly pump which is used for the reservoir. Can standard hydraulic fluid be used for the M&W live pump? I know for the lift-all system regular hydraulic fluid is too thin.

I live in SD where it can get to -30 F on a cold winter. Temps below 0 F will make Hy-Tran whine in mine until it gets warmed up a bit.

If the whining goes away after it warms up a bit, the noise is probably due to the cold temps.

You need to read your manual again. The book calls for 30 wt in the summer, 20wt. in cooler weather, and 10wt, for extreme cold. If you have converted to a live hydraulic pump, you should be using hytran.

Is HyTran a Case/IH brand of hydraulic fluid or is it just a generic hydraulic fluid?

Thats odd, our dealer recommends running Hytran in older tractors hydraulic systems. Our M has had Hytran in the belly pump since we bought it(18+ years ago). It hasn't leaked yet and its lifting power seems very consistent. It's nice with Hytran in the M because then it can use the same implements as the other tractors that require Hytran. Just a thought.

Chadd, you are correct, HyTran will work just fine in the belly pump and then that tractor will be compatible with the rest of the machinery in use. My dads old H had JDD hydraulic oil in the belly pump because then it was compatible with the 3020 and 4020 Deere tractors. Those old lift-all systems really don't care what type of oil is in them.

Just out of curiosity, how strong are the hydraulics supposed to be on an M? Ours seems to be really strong for the low pressure pump (it is a 1940). We needed to move our IH Vibrashank that still had the tines in the ground a little. The M was running, so I thought I would give it a shot. I was amazed when the M picked it up out of the ground. Are the belly pumps normally that strong?

The pump is only part of how strong a hydraulic system is. Most of the power is in the cylinder. If a hydraulic pump puts out for instance 1000 pounds per square inch it puts that much pressure on the area of the piston in the cylinder. If the cylinder piston has an area of 10 square inches, (a little over 3.5 inch diameter) it will lift 10,000 pounds. Multiply that by 2 cylinders and you can lift 10 ton (20,000 pounds).
