I am looking at getting a 656 with year-a-round cab. It has d282,gear drive with ta, wide front.
I would like to put a loader on it to use to put out 900 pound roll bales.

Right now I am using a farmall H wiht horn loader (old style with trip bucket). I have been using this tractor for the last 7 years to feed hay. As it is 60 years old now I would like to find somthing new!!!

I need somthing small enough to get around with, but with moden convences (cab, live hydraylics, ect).

I would like to get out of the Ice age (farmall H) and step in to the stone age (656)

How well will this work out for me????
Thanks,

Jonh

Jonney Don't let antone tell you the 656 is just an up date of any of the older IH. True the gears are set the same. That is where it all ends as for the rear end, oh the TA the same, much better steering, bttter hydraulics, better brakes better adjusting of the brakes. Bigger bull gears better bearings, heaver axel housings and much heaver rear end housing, better PTO.

One more question

I have read that the 656 is basicaly an updated and improved M.

My question is about the transmission. On the H and M the only gears I use Is 4 and reverse. 1 thru 3 are too slow for much of any thing and 5 is too fast except for road. Is the gearing of the 656 better spread out.

Does any one have the mph of each gear list any where????

Thanks

Re: Model H charging system in reply to gene bender, 03-08-2009 15:44:03
OK, I polarized, got a spark, still no charge. I showed voltage @ batt terminal of cutout, nothing @ arm terminal. I grounded field against the gen case. No go. I did removed the band from the gen case and found that the third brush was loose, tightened it up. I checked for voltage @ arm terminal and got about one volt. for the heck of it I closed the cutout manually and bang! Away it went. I can now get the cutout to open and close by itself, just a bit sluggishly. It will charge on high, but not on low. At least I know the generator is working now.

Can it be that the generator had lost its magnetism? THis tractor was hauled out of the weeds by a friend about three weeks ago and judging by the green/ rust it has sat for a looong time. I replaced all the original cloth covered wiring that was bare in many spots along with making up new 1/0 cables with true crimped on ends. New six volt battery/ tractor runs like a million bucks now that all the usual things have been adressed like carb/ plugs/ points/etc.

The charging system working is icing on the cake! THanks

The 656 is basically an improved 560 which is an improved 450 which was an improved 400 which was an improved SMTA which was an improved Super M which was an improved M. (Not trying to be smart, just giving you some history.)

The 560 had gearing that roughly was 1.5 mph in 1st, 2.5 mph in 2nd, 4.5 in 3rd, 7.5 in 4th and 18 in 5th. The 656 is comparable and with the TA that will give you gears that are about 65 % of the speeds that I listed above.

I hope this helps.

I don't have a list with the exact speeds, but I would imagine that the speeds would be pretty similar, maybe a little faster. If not having enough gears is a problem, get one with a T/A. That'll give you 10 forward speeds and 2 reverse. With the T/A on though, each gear is 10 or 20% slower than normal, so it may not be of help. We had a 656, but ours was a Hydro, so ours had infinite speeds within two ranges. Always thought that would have made a great loader tractor.

I"ve moved alot of hay with a 656 diesel just like you"re thinking of. The tractor was our main loader tractor for years and never had a problem with moving round bales. The rear tires are full of fluid, and 5 sets of weights on each wheel.

Jonney The 656 should do very well for that job. No matter what outfit one has wieght on the back is good idea.

A 656 should do a nice job of moving those bales for you if they only weigh about 900 lbs. I have an M under a DuAll loader that I have been using since 1984 for moving round bales that weigh between 1000 and 1400 lbs. It has 15.5 38 inch tires on 14” rims and two sets of wheel weights (no fluid) on it with a wide front and power steering. If the bales are over 1200 lbs and the M is marginal for doing this and you have to be very careful but the lighter ones are no problem for it. Then again, I don’t move them far and load them on wagons for transporting out in the cow yard over the frozen cow pies to save the tractor front end.

Compared to the H it should be quite a refreshing experience especially if that cab has a heater!!

For a 60 year old tractor the H does a great job of moving them. It has one set of weights and no fluid in the tires. The loader arms run back the the rear axle and the front mount is about a foot behind the front wheels. I think it goes just as good thru mud snow with a bale on the front as it does with out one on there.

They just don't make them like they used to.....

It's more convenient & much safer to feed round bales with a little $150 3-pt spear.

We keep the hay stacked up and covered. Have to use a loader to get it down. Other wise I would have to agree with you....
