Lately the reverse gear was very noisy....today while plowing it just went...gone!..No REVERSE!....The other gears seem to have a slight grinding noise while driving along now to.Did the transmission go that quick?.Or is this a simple thing that can be repaired ?..Also,the motor oil is dripping from around the dipstick (bubbling up around it)..the tractor isnt hot.the oil level was correct...what can cause this.Gees,,right in the middle of snow plowing season,,,nice timing..thanks,all for listening .. can you help?..Glen

Do what jimN sudjests and take off the transmission top cover. You might only have bent selectors wich will let the gears rub together. To lift the top cover you will have to remove the hyd lift unit first. I surgest you get a workshop manual first. The I&T one is the one I have used. Good luck and do not trap your fingers. MJ

There"s no way to know what"s wrong without tearing into the tractor. It could be simple, or it could be an entire transmission rebuild.

Oil bubbling up around the dipstick... Well, the crankshaft spinning around will splash engine oil all over the place as a matter of course. If it"s not sealed up, the oil"s gonna come out.

IH tractors of that era had rubber plugs as part of the dipstick unit. You would twist to loosen, pull the dipstick, then tighten it back down after replacing the dipstick to seal the filler tube. You"re either not doing that, or the rubber stopper is messed up.

If it"s leaking around where the filler tube is pressed into the block, you need a new filler tube.

Thanks. The grinding noise only started lately,in reverse...then it seemed that when i put it in reverse today,it was a gear slipping,or something. It(the tractor), would move in very small moves, then not move at all.It wont go into reverse at all now.I know this tractor is subject to gear noise, upon startup,it is very hard to shif at first ,for it grinds in all gears..after warm up its ok.Also, sometimes the gearshift lever would "go out of place" and i would have to take the cotter pin out, pull the lever out, and reset it in the proper place, because the tractor would "bind up" in gear,as if the brake was on...and i only had a gear or two. This tractor had these troubles for a while...Ill check the dipstick oil seal also..Thanks....Glen

From the description I believe it is going to be more than the shifter forks and lever ball.
Pulling the cover will tell the story. I hope it is as simple as a bent or worn reverse fork. Good luck,
JimN
