Ring Gear Problem

Rebuilding Super A, got everything back together, motor turned easy by turning by hand, then put starter on, and ring gear is loose on flywheel. anyone care to suggest if i could possibly spotweld it on to flywheel ? - thanks

I have pulled apart many tractors in my lifetime and have seen quite a few with the ring gear welded to the flywheel. The best is to use stainless steel welding rod because of its high tensile strength and superior bonding qualities with dissimilar metals. Best is to weld on the opposite side of starter engagement so as not to cause interference with starter function. If not possible, make sure ring gear teeth are not damaged. Also, seeing as a four cylinder always stops in one of two places, make sure you don"t have the two primary engagement spots on the ring gear where they have been if they"re worn. Easy way to check is to start the tractor, and then shut it off. It will stop in one of the two places it always does, and you can peer into the starter hole and see if the teeth are worn. If so, give the ring gear a quarter turn.

Yes that will work. You can get to the ring gear easy down by the pan with the cover off that way you wont do any damage to the side the bendix works.

is there a way to repair the teeth without removing it? I know they can grind a crankshaft without taking it out. just wondering.

Provided it was the correct ring gear to begin with and it worked, the repairs you did to the tractor have nothing to do with it. It won't become loose by itself. What do you mean by loose? It moves on the flywheel? Or, the starter spins but does not engage, or turns then stops turning. That's a starter or drive gear problem. Or else the teeth are broken on the starter or ring gear, or both.

loose meaning, when I turn the starter over, it spins the ring gear, but not the flywheel. Thanks for your input. I do know the Super A was locked up when I had it, so perhaps someone had tried to force it to turn over and severed the ring and the fly ? - les

I agree with Levi. Either you didn't heat it up and let it seat properly, or you got the wrong sized ring gear. I heated mine up in an oven for my Super C, to about 450 degrees, the gear dropped right into place, cooled, seated tight and worked perfectly.

No, shouldn't have to. Should fit right on... should, key word, should. When my dad put a new ring gear in my 300, he put it on the wood buring stove and heated it up with a acetalyne torch and it fit right on. Did you heat it up? How'd you get it on?

sorry, I may not have been clear, this was the ring gear that was already on the tractor. I rebuilt the motor, convert to 12V, rebuilt carb, etc, but did not break tractor in 1/2, thanks

I don't see why you couldn't spot weld it in 4 /5 places, providing it isn't "jingling" loose.

Permatex brand stud and bearing mount liquid is a non welding solution. It needs to be warm (as in room temp., and sit for a day to cure. Use brake kleen on the parts to assure dry and clean. Then the mount fluid. Be sure it gets under the ring all around.
