I just bought a 1940 Farmall H. It was converted to a 12 volt system. I'm having trouble finding 12 volt bubls. The 6 volt bubls that came with the tractor are flat on the top. i have tried a bunch of places and no one has any. I'm also looking for a price to replace 5th gear. so if anyone could help me please e-mail me. Thank You

If it has the standard H 4/5th slider gear and that is the problem, new aftermarket ones are available for around $100. However, I just did this a while back on a Super H (The gear is $210 for that)and ended up replacing 5 bearings, several shaft seals (while you have it apart, you will want to do that)and some other items. The parts bill totaled to over $600. This was the first one for me and I am slow, but I figure I spent at least 30 hrs on the job.

Chris, I checked my M parts catalog and the 12 volt bulb is listed as being no. 1143 with 32 candlepower at 12-16 volts. The 6 volt bulb is no. 1133 again with 32 candlepower at 6-8 volts. I don't know the candlepower for the others listed as back-up lights but are probably some other rating. Hope this helps. Hal

Isn't 5th gear in an H direct drive? You might need some shift collar or fork work.

about that 5th gear, be sure the gear is engaging all the way. you can check this by taking the belt pulley gear box off and shifting into 5th gear. if it is touching, you can bend the fork to make it engage. be very careful because it does not take much. hope it helps. a lot easier than spliting the tractor. i have done it several times.

Chris Gery are you sure you need the gear? have you checked to make sure that h does not have a 5th gear lock out bolt?

For the 5th gear. Just put a add on this site in the classified ads section.
There are 1000's of H's in salvage yards. You should get about 20 responses with a vierity of prices. Pick the best one.

Paul I think an 1156 is a two element Brake/tail light number for 6 volt systems. The corect bulb is much larger and brighter, though it does have the same diameter bayonette base. (I do not know the number)

1156 for back up,1157 taillight,194 wedge base (side marker, licence plate),69/89 single contact small globe,4411 sealed beam 4" tractor lamp,I believe 1034 is the 6V equivalent of either the 1157 or 1156.

You are very correct
An interestin bulb is 1183 6 volt It has the flattened dome shape. I went to NAPA to get my bulb screwed in without cross threading.

Old, O'Reilly's is where I found 12 volt bulbs for mine, and they are REAL headlight bulbs. I don't know the number either, the bulbs themselves do not have the number stamped on them. The bulbs that everyone else has mentioned ARE NOT headlight bulbs, they are tailight and parklight bulbs.

If some one would post the 6 volt number I could probably remember the 12 volt number. I know its some thing like but not sure, 1146. O'riellys has 2 differant ones also one is flat and one has a curved top but both work well

Rich, 1143 is the 12 volt 32 candlepower lamp and 1133 is the 6 volt 32 candlepower lamp listed in my M parts manual. The MD was a 12 volt system so that is why they are listed in the manual. Send me an email as it's open as I'm another Missouri Farmaller down here in Rolla and Jimmy has mentioned you in the past. Have a good day and it's snowing down here with the wind howling. Take care. Hal
