My wife is reading a book (Blessings by Anna Quindlen)and in it the author refers to someone who is "uinmistakable in his red John Deere hat". Is this a blooper?? Has there ever been a red JD anything??

Well, John Deere did paint some of their 430 utility models red for "industrial" customers (state, counties etc). But I doubt they ever made a red hat.

Well he certainly wouldn't be "unmistakeable" in a green JD hat, or a red Farmall cap. So my guess is he made up a red JD hat just to straddle the fence and poke some fun.

Back in the "old days" John Deere had quite a bit of red in their color scheme. The corn binders, grain binders and other horse equipment had red parts, and I have a John Deere Van Brunt grain drill, that has galvanized seed box with red lettering.

Gauger: I was once told by the sons of a friend of mine, that I wasn't allowed in their shop with my red Farmall hat. Their dad and grandfather had been Farmall farmers while the boys had become Deere farmers. I complied with their wishes, I now where a green hat, but my hat is green, yellow and red. Yes the Oliver hat took the wind out of those boys.

Either its total fiction (like "Christine" being a 4 door Plymouth Fury),or the guy made his own by sewing a Dear John patch on a blank red hat.
