My uncle, at 43, had to have a hip replaced. He always had trouble sitting for more than an hour and when our herdsman left the 4240 parked in gear (the day after he was told to NEVER park it in gear) while they worked on whatever he broke that day, when it nearly ran my uncle over because of our herdsman, it was was the straw that broke the camels back, because it turns out he had a birth defect in both hips. To see him wallk 2 months afterward you would never have guessed he could barely walk that short a time ago. Well, come august, his leg started hurting. They thought it was his knee but arthroscopic surgery didn't do any good. They opened him back up 15 months after the hip replacement to change it out again. It's been a year now and he's listened to the doctor about how much he can lift this time, and got a job driving truck.

John M . I see you had an ankle fused as well? How Long before the Dr let you put weight on the foot? I have to go see him in 2 weeks for first follow up Visit. They got 4 big screws in me holding it shut so it can grow together .

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. He didnt want me to do anything for at least 2 weeks, but I hated those sponge baths from my wife, and I was bored out of my skull! As soon as I had a visit with him about 10 days after surgery,I told im I felt up to walking some and thats when I started my physical therapy.I hated going there so on my own I did a few of the excersizes on my own and after a week or so,I could accually tell the difference, even when I did go to physical therapy they were impressed. After about 3 weeks,I was back at work on a limited schedule, when I started hurting,I went home!I didnt over do it by no means and used my crutches alot but I was adding a little more weight every day just because it accually felt good to be able to put it down.Toward the end of my 5th week,my Dad was getting his leg amputated and wouldnt lie through the experience.I walked the halls of the hospital so much I swear it helped me heal alot faster.

Sorry about the delay in your projects but you've got some good advice here so far. My nickel is: your physical therapist is your best friend - do everything he or she tells you to do! As often, as long, and as hard as required those things are the most important to regaining all your range and strength. Have seen several folks who shorted the routine and lost. It hurt - it was boring. The more you do the more you can. Amaze a PT and you will do your self well. How's that for a sermon? Fast recovery Dick Davis

Well, at 42 you've got a bunch of good years ahead so be a good boy and do what they tell you so you'll be up and kicking by spring! I know what you mean about what happens as one gets older; I've got 21 years on you and have been lucky so far. Asthma and arthroscopic knee surgery have been relatively minor problems for me. But, on my last visit to my orthopedic guy, he warned me that I'm probably looking at a hip replacement within a couple of years. My way of looking at this is that I'm thankful that they have so many things they can pull out of their bags of tricks today compared to 30 or 40 years ago.

So--sit back and enjoy the snowstorm; you'll be up and around about the time the weather gets good.

I don't envy you on the two month couch sentencing. I guess I can't b*tch then...all the years of hockey finally caught up with me when I broke my 4th and 5th metacarpals in my right hand last weekend...but I'm only casted for 4 weeks. What's bad is I've gone from about 80 words a minute to about 15 on this d*mn laptop.

Hope ya get better. You'll have to update me on the weather, since I leave to see a buddy in Barnstead, NH on Sunday.

I guess the H will wait a few weeks for it's carburetor rebuild.

Good luck!

Billy

I've never been there despite my buddy always coming back to Wisconsin with me when we were going to school in Chicago. A little bit of city was a bit too much for a couple of rural boys. Going home on the weekend and helpin' out on the farm kept us all sane now that I think about it.

There could be worse places to spend 2 months(like the hospital). Keep us up to date on Jerry Springer and Oprah!!
Seriously, though, good luck on the recovery.
Kevin
