Hi Guys I have a 706 that quits running when it wants to. If I let it sit for a while it will start again. Also it has been sitting now for 11/2 years now. How should I go about getting her going? Thanks Guys

Well i need to know more but here like others have said , do you have good fuel flow to the carb , i have seen floating dabre in the fuel tank clog the stem on the sediment bowl and when it stops running float away till it covers the stem again . Next is a coil that when it gets hot it breaks down and shuts the tractor off till it cools down it could be a bad condenser or it could be that someone has bypassed the resistor and causing a problem at the points and coil . It could be the fuel shutoff selenoid but most of the time when they go back it just won't start. Next if it pings and rattels and knockes then pulls down and stops then you got big problems as she is locking up because you are not running the wright gas and your timming is off and the pistons are swelling up and gulding to the sleeves only use 93 octain gas in them BTDT.

MNSCOTT has the right idea I think. I had trouble with a solenoid fuel shutoff that acted similar to this. It would quit after running awhile, cool off, then would be able to restart. Kept getting worse until it wouldn't start. Try backing the solenoid out 1 to 2 turns, & see what happens. Mine would run well by adjusting the solenoid like this, but not on idle & load. I believe a new one was in the neighborhood of 75 dollars. I got a "standard" needle {load] that would fit in it's place & have had no more trouble. Can't remember what kind it was, though.

If your tractor has a 12 volt system and has a ballast resistor to drop the voltage could be the problem too. Hal

When the tractor quits running, pull the coil wire from the center the of distributor cap and hold within a 1/4" of a good ground on the block.
You need to do this as soon as the engine quits running before the coil cools.

You should have a hot blue spark. One more thing
to check is your battery voltage at the coil. You should have battery voltage at the coil as long as the ignition switch is in the on position.
When it quits check for that voltage at the coil too. Your ignition switch may be the problem. Hal

Also check the fuel shutoff solenoid in the side of the carb and the wiring to it. When you shut the key off it should click off. It prevents runon in a hot engine.

If its a deisel did you replace the fuel filters. When they sit that long the filters get clogged.

If its a gas did you check for something cloging the fuel line. rust from the gas tank likes to clog up the sedement bowl or something in the carb.

good luck with the 706

I would start with the cheap easy fix and go from there. I would first check that you have good gas flow to the carb when it does that, pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas. Also when it shuts down check to make sure you have a good blue spark. If the spark is weak try a hot wire from the battery to the coil to make sure is not a switch or wiring problem. If it runs good with the hot wire then the problem is from the coil back. If the hot wire doesn't help then I would do the good old points, condenser, plugs, cap and rotor. Then if it still dies I would try the coil. Doing it that way you go from cheap to higher priced stuff

Troy, If it just shuts off like the switch was turned off then I would try a coil. If its spitting, sputtering, coughing & wheezing & then shutting off, I would go through the fuel system.
