656 ring gear again

Hello, A few days ago I made a post about whether a 656 ring gear could be flipped and used on the other side. I had just done that but the newly rebuilt stater would stick in the gear. Anyway I ended up getting a new gear thinking that the gear teeth should have a slight bevel to them to allow the starter gear to mesh properly. The new gear arrived today and it doesn't seem to have a bevel either. It looks identical on both sides. Now I wonder whether it is worth splitting the tractor again to put in the new gear, or could something else be causing the started to drag. It actually engages and then can't be stopped without unhooking the battery.Anyone have any thoughts. I hate to keep bring up the subject but it has me stumped.
Thanks for the help, YC

I was the one who said it made no difference on the bevel in the prior postings.

I believe the solenoid is hanging internally.
My original recommendation was to put on a new drive.

If you can take the solenoid off of the starter just after the system "stays on" without removing the starter, you might find the problem.

With the solenoid comming off, does the mechanism click and free up, or does the linkage remain stuck?

If stuck, loosen the starter and try to free it that way. The gear on the flywheel is probably not going to make any difference.

De grease all solenoid components with Electro Motive degreaser (or=), then spray with silicon spray in the solenoid plunger area, as well as the shaft of the starter motor where the drive slides, and use chassis grease on the pivot points of the lever.

The solenoid should release!

Keep in touch, pictures would be interesting.

Thanks for the info. I took the starter down and they put a new solenoid on it, though the old one worked fine on the bench. Hooked it up last night and it did the same thing. If the tractor doesn't start the starter will keep on going after the button is released and even the key off, only can be stopped if the bat cable is removed. However if the tractor starts the starter will disengage, surely because the engine speed soon exceeds the starter speed and unbinds the bendix gear to the ring gear. Last night I readied the tractor to split again but wanted to wait and see what you all had to say. The thought the other fellow had about the wrong size bendix could be it and I will call the starter guy to see if it could be so. I thought that perhaps the starter was reaching the burred teeth on the flipped ring gear and getting hung that way. Plan to put the new gear on today, though would welcome an excuse not to have to split her again. Thanks YC

Do not split the tractor yet.

Disconnect the starter from the start terminal to the push button. If the starter has a wire going to the ignition coil or resistor, remove that as well.

With only the main battery cable hooked to the big terminal on the solenoid, use a jumper wire from that big (hot) terminal to the S terminal. The starter should engage and turn the engine. when the wire is removed, it should stop. If it does the real problem is in the wireing.

That is easily fixed. Let me know soon,
