My father and I are restoring my first tractor. It is a 1961 560 D. It had several problems that required splitting it and a complete rebuild of the motor. We thought we had it all ready to fire up but when we went to turn the fuel on it ran out the top of the glass like it was not on tight. We took it apart and found the casting was bent. We tried to straiten it and put in a double rubber gasket but it still leeks. You can not get a new one from the IH dealer so I found 2 different used ones but they are worse then the first one I had. Let me know if you guys have any other ideas for me to try. Thanks

You might try using a 2x6 with a hole drilled in it the size of the threaded part of the sediment bowl "casting". Cut a notch in the 2by for the shutoff [turns fuel on & off] so that the casting will sit upside down - supported by the 2by. Get a washer big enough [ the size of the glass ] to fit in the "casting". If you can have the use of an arbor press, take a large socket upside down on the washer & put pressure on the assembly. Use common sense about the amount of pressure, as this is potmetal or cast zinc. You might be able to bring it back into shape enough to be able to use a new gasket & permatex #2 to seal it up. WE've straightened a couple of bent housings this way. If no press is available, a large vise might work. can't see what you're doing as well, though. Good luck with it.

Just because it leaks, does not mean it has to be tighter. That is how the casting gets bent. Get a new one and don"t over tighten it, in the end it will be much better.

Bull,

The things always wanna leak every time ya take 'em apart. Put 'er back together with just one gasket. Snug 'er pretty darned good with a pair of pliers.

You can't get it tight enough just using your fingers.

Theres an adjustment under the bulb that you can tighten, maybe you know that. Beware about the 560D's they blow head gaskets all the time.

I ran a 560D for 20 years and never blew a head gasket. His being a '61 he shouldn't have to worry about it. Just need to use common sense when operating the machine, just like anything else. JohnG

So what causes the head gaskets to go? Maybe my dumb luck, but had a 560D for a while and no problems.

Mostly because they only have 14 head bolts. Most six-cylinder diesels have 26. Problems arise when you have an operator who gets it real hot or does not allow the engine to cool down before shutting it off. They"re fine if you don"t abuse them.
