MD throttle problem??????????

Have a 1948 MD. Seems the engine speed cannot advance much when you move the throttle. When trying to get going in 5th gear the engine will not throttle up enough to get her going. Seems to stay at about the same speed. Could this mean the speed control lever needs to be adjusted or am I going in the wrong direction with this problem. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.. Anyone know how to go about adjusting the speed control lever if that is the problem.

Without seeing what you have its hard to tell since a lot of those throttle linkages have been modified over the years. If original you go up or
clockwise with throttle lever to advance speed.Easy check is have tractor running on diesel, out of gear ,brakes locked and so forth.Take the pin out of throttle lever and linkage on side of pump, move lever to rear by hand,if engine will go to full speed check all linkage and adjustments. If it won't speed up like that check for pluged air cleaner, pipes or butterflys not opening in intake. If still no luck check fuel flow and pump. Also if your linkage from decommpression lever is not moving some parts out of gas mode it will block original throttle linkage from advancing speed on pump very much.

On my 1947 MD I had a similiar problem. There is alot of short pieces that make up the throttle linkage, and all of the holes where egged out some which made it sloppy. and I could not get full throttle, actually it was just about half with the old setup. I have replaced all of the short pieces with one solid rod from a homemade throttle lever directly to the injection pump. If you cannot take off in 5th gear you need an overhaul really bad. You should be able to to get going on a flat surface even if your motor is not in the best of shape. Or at least mine would before I rebuilt the motor.

Does the same thing happen in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Neutral?

If so, you probably have a governor problem. Diesels run at full throttle (i.e. the air intake is wide open) all the time. The "throttle lever" actually controls the governor, which in turn controls the injection pump. The injection pump controls the amount of fuel going into the engine, which controls the engine speed.

You can't "adjust" a governor problem. Something is broken, and it needs to be diagnosed and repaired.

If not, then your tractor doesn't have enough power to accelerate in 5th gear. This may mean your engine is in need of an overhaul.

Are you trying to start out in 5th?

Allan, Yes I was. Told it should be able to do this. Engine seems to run fine except the throttle does not seem to be able to advance the engine speed. Does not smoke or miss a beat?

Do as Dave S. stated and see if the motor revs up to where is should be. Also see if you can rotate the throttle lever upwards (wide open throttle) to see if the linkage is binding. If it is just troubleshoot your way down the linkage until you find it. My guess it would be in a spot located behind the fuel filters.
