After getting to know all you good folks over the course of restoring the Super A, and realizing what a smart bunch of people you are, I was wondering how you all would handle a $20k winfall. Seriously folks, what would you do if you came into a nice chunk of change? Vacation?,where? Invest?, how? Tractors? Which one(s)? Help a friend?

A ton of great suggestions, some of which will be taken. I have no kids and no debts, 5 tractors, a van, 250 diesel pu and an old explorer. Always wanted a harley but the people around here will run me over before I'd get a hundred miles on it, bunch of fools. Heavily invested in the stock market and own several properties and businesses. Don't really want any more real estate as I am tired of this area and thinking of selling out and finding something new to get into. Just never was the type to retire, I figure I'll drop dead while turning a wrench or climbing a ladder or selling a contract, who knows. I always give to the church, last time I did give alot, I was rewarded with a mid 6 figure contract. That 4h tractor idea sounds pretty good too! Still thinking about it.

Alot of great responses and real fun reading guys! I let you know what happens.

Thanks,

scott#2

Reminds me of an old joke;

Spend half on women and booze. Then just squander the rest of the money.

first 15% to church (i know 10% but hey that much what would another 5% hurt) then give the kids some, the wife a little more, get out of debt. then if anys left i'd work on my h farmall and probabally put a blower on my 560, and repaint my corn picker so it could go to the field looking new. what a site that would be. and if anything is left put down payment on a new used diesel pickup.

$20K would pay off everything I owe to anybody, and let me put about $3K in my IRA.

Of course, I'd go right back into debt over something. Can't stand the thought of not having any payments, just seems so un-'murican...

This is some thing nobody has mentioned. Be sure and tithe to your local church. You will be surprised at how far the money will go. Just my 10% Boyd

Depends a lot on your age, family situation, financial condition, etc. However my thoughts are pretty much like Paul Schuler’s below:

- If you have credit card debt, pay that off first.

- If you have kids and anticipate college in the future, put as much away as you can in high yield CD’s or similar conservative investments and earmark it for college expenses. Figure at current prices an “average” 4 year degree for one kid will cost about the same as a decent house. $20K is a mere f*rt in the college expense hurricane if you have more than one kid! (Been there, done that….)

- If you haven’t already, fund a Roth IRA for yourself and for your wife. Or if you’re working and your employer offers a 401(k) plan, contribute the max to the 401(k) and gradually draw on the windfall to offset the reduction in take home pay.

And if you are fortunate enough to have all the above covered, THEN be thinking about a vacation, buying that tractor, etc!

Never loan money to friends unless you really didn't like that person all that much anyway, and you don't expect to ever see the money back.

Me? I'd pay off the credit card, pay off the truck, hire someone to insulate, ventilate, and put a new roof on my house. That'd kill the $20 grand right there, but if I had any left over, I'd get a new welder, new set of flame wrenches...

First I would pay off my credit cards, and then pay off my wife's car. After that I would use the remaining $4000 on a down payment for a house (or to cover closing costs, since houses here cost $200,000 for a small starter home).

I was off on my number for a starter home. There is one right across the street from where I work in an OK neighborhood (some nicer houses, but mostly run-down trailers) that is currently being built. Looks to be around 1400 square feet with a 2 stall garage on a small lot... Called up the realtor, $239,900. I hung up on her... $20k is nothing these days.

Thats the way it is right now too. Kind of scary right now. Wages are not going up enough to support these housing prices.
Last spring I was in Katie Texas visiting. I saw fresh built houses in new subdivisions going for $80,000
Now thats a fair price. To bad its too too hot there.

They pay better here, but not that much better. This $240k house would be about $50k in North Dakota.

In ND I would get about 2/3 my current salary and could buy a house for about 1/4 what it costs here. I could definitaly go for that, once the bills are paid off and we have money put away, I think it's time to go back to ND...

I'd buy another rent house or other income producing property, having suffered enough in the stock market for the rest of my life.

The 18% return touted below is really great if it holds up. Usually good returns are offered because of a risk, otherwise the market drives up the price until returns don't look attractive. In other words, if their unit price is so low the dividend is 18%, the savvy investors are scared of it. If you want to gamble, stick to farming, buy 20 big steers and feed them out.

I bought Furr's Cafeteria stock years ago. They obviously had a business you could see, and were paying 12% dividend. After holding it a few quarters, I noticed their net worth seemed to go down by about the amount of their dividend each quarter. My broker talked me into keeping it, so I rode it all the way to worthless. If fact I still own $30,000 worth which I could sell at $10 but I'm counting on a rebound.

I've got a fair amount of rental property and pay a management firm to handle all contact with renters. You put the down payment into the property and rent pays the mortgage with enough left over to repay the down payment in a few years. After the mortgage is paid, it seems they gave you the property for worrying about it. I've never had one go down in value, most have gone up very well. The worst thing that can happen is urban renewal buys you out but they will always pay at least what you have in the property (in my limited experience).

Hi Scott,

I'd buy a stock called NFI, a realestate investment trust, trading at $31/share = 645shares that pays $5.60 dividend/share a year or $3613yr, $903/qtr, or a return gross yield of about 18%.

Thats $903 every 3mths you have to spend, (less taxes), or a gift that keeps on giving and "if" the price of the stock doesn't drop, you still have your original $20k when/if you sell the stock.

You need to buy the stock approx before Mar.21, to collect $903 in April. You "may" also have to pay income tax on the $20k so don't forget about that.

Kinda lucky with no debts, kids grown, so maybe a little nest egg for the grand kids and start looking at a 1086 or 1466. (For my vacation)

Actually,We were sorta in that position after we sold our house last fall.We got a price that I wouldn't have given for it and we bought a newer house that we put about 50% down on.With the money we had left over we were able to buy 3 adjacent lots and put up a 40 x60 building. I always felt I would like to go back to school and get a degree in something though.John.

Paul, I talked to my brother Tuesday afternoon and he mentioned that he had your Model 100 apart and soaking in cleaner. Sounds like he had it diagnosed correctly. I think he was going to try to get it shipped out yesterday. I think that you will be happy with the cost and the performance. Randy

Hi Randy
That"s me! I was kind of wondering if he got it since I didn"t hear from him. I thought I"d better find out before nobody remembered my even having shipped it! I realized that all I had was a reciept from my local CO-OP that does my UPS shipping for me.
Glad to hear that it"s almost (or is) done. It"s not like I need the tractor right now anyway though. I"m looking forward to it running like it never has.
I"m thinking I"ll need to send my 706 pump and injectors to him too. Thanks again for reffering him to me.
Paul

(1) Retirement fund -- at least part of it.
(2) Don't pay off the mortagage - tax deductions are important and getting harder to find.
(3) Figure out the seed money for an endowment for FFA or High School Shop tractor restoration projects. Maybe offer to buy a project tractor each year(or bankroll the parts)to get/keep the next generation in our hobby. My nickel Dick Davis
