1941 MODEL A POPPING THROUGH EXHAUST . HELP!

Just got mag fixed, and got tractor fired up after sitting for two years. Started right up,but it has a popping back through the exhaust. So istarted pulling plug wires. When #1 cylinder is disconnected the popping goes away. Is this just acase of the valve's being stuck or out of adjustment?CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE ME, THANKS.

Both of my repair books say to set both intake and exhaust valves to .014 hot.

Check the firing order (1-3-4-2) to make sure the spark plug wires are on correct. Make sure that the magneto timing is correct.

If that checks out, take out the number one spark plug and put your finger over the spark plug hole. Turn the engine over by hand until you feel pressure coming out of the spark plug. If don't feel pressure, you probably have a stuck exhaust valve on that cylinder.

If you have pressure and the spark plug wires are right then check the valve clearance to make sure it is correct.

Do a compression check on #1 (if no gauge, hand crank in neutral with ign off with thumb over plug hole). if no compression, pull valve cover and check for a stuck valve. If all are moving, adjust them. There could be a chunk of crud under the exhaust valve, if so the exhaust valve on #1 will be loose when adjusted, instead of ~.020 it will be more like .050 or more. If it is, just running it for a few minutes might clear it. Or tapping on the stem of the valve (downward with the rockers removed) may also break crud off of the face/seat.
If problem remains, do a leakdown check to see where the air is going. Good luck

I found that when i pulled off the valve cover that adjuster on exhaust valve on #1 had backed off far enough that the push rod had had slipped past the rocker. And on#4the intake valve it was fully backed off out of adjustment. Could you tell me what valve clearance's on the intake valve's are? THANKS

Kevin, it sounds like you have found the trouble.

However, in spite of what you may read on the internet, International Harvester says to set the valve lash of your Farmall A at .014 HOT for both intake and exhaust.

They should be set at .017-.018 hot. That means after the engine is completely heated up check the valve clearence.
