Was the engine running well during warm weather? If it is running rich after cold [below freezing] weather, check for ice build-up in the oil bath air cleaner cup, which is maybe restricting air flow. We used to operate our A alot in snowy conditions. Oilbath air cleaners see snow as solid material[dirt] which it rightly deposits in the cup. Along comes a warm day, & the snow melts leaving water in the bottom of the cup. After enough freeze/ melt cycles, air flow down the air intake pipe is restricted/ blocked & you get black smoke/no running. Ours was totally blocked once, but warming the cup & getting the ice out restored proper operation. Worth a look.

I bought a rebuilt carb from a rebuilder for my A and still had a hard time getting it to work right. It is working right now, but it must have taken me about 15 times to get it right, carbs can just be a pain like that sometimes.

Hey russel, Take the coil wire out of the dist cap and hold it about an 1/2"or a little closer to the screw on the side of the mag for the kill wire and turn her over and see what you have for lenght and color of spark. Let me know in a new post and I will see what I can tell you. I also rebuild mags. JON

Did you vat the carb and blow out all passages well. Didn't by chance stuff rag and leave in air intake port or maybe air filter restricted causing rich mixture. Maybe bowl float has pinhole and drowning.
Could also be valves are not seating well. Check compression.

Which does it have a mag or dist?? If its a dist. I would change the points, condenser rotor and cap. Any one of those could be your problem. Also you say the plugs foul, does it smoke?? If it does it just plain need to have the engine rebuilt. Depending on why the plug foul, if its from oil then a rebuild is about the only way to fix that problem

It smokes very little. Black smoke but when I fist got it running a few months ago it didn't smoke at all. Is there anything I can do to the Mag?

Well since its a mag then you can still replace the point and condenser, which may help. If you have black smoke that means its running a little rich. If it has a main jet adjustment you might turn it in a little. If it doesn't then you may still have a porblem in the carb, ya I know you siad you rebuilt it but some times they can be a bear to get just right
