Not clear on the way to start up one of these. Hard to figure out for sure the explaination in the operators manual. To get into the deisel mode is the compression lever moved into the up positon(towards the sky) or the down position (towards the ground)? Any advice on the proper start up would be a help. Also where should the throttle handle be placed when going into deisel mode?

The compression lever should be located on the left side of the fuel tank, pulling it back switches the tractor to diesel. The throttle lever should be set at a high idle, which is slightly down from the furthest it will go in the clockwise direction, if it is the factory lever. There is a detent position, however usually the pieces are so wore you can't feel it. When the engine starts to run kind of rough on gas and smoke blue, you have it in the right spot

Say Vet, Does that mean the decompresion lever is pulled toward you ( the down position) when the tractor is in the deisel mode?

Well all the MD -450 that i have been around the lever stands strigh up and down not pointing up and down or layen on it's side however and one thing about it if it turns over fast then ya got it wright if it has a hard time running over the either ya got weak batterys or ya have the lever in the wrong posision try the other way.

Pull starting -decompression lever back pull choke make sure gas is turned on press starter botton after the gas side is running allow it to run on the gas side till the engine speed come up and runs smoothe for atleast a min . or two pull the throttel to about 1/4 and make the switch allow the diesel to run for awhile to warm up before utting it to work and if worked allow time for cool down before shut down and in all the years i have ran the gas start diesels i never switch back to the gas side when shutting them down as this causes the combustion chamber to heat back up and i never cracked a head on any of them that i ran or had this was told to me by and old timmer I H mechanic and never go to the field with out refilling the starting tank because if ya stall it out in the field and no gas to restart that is when you will do the most damage to the head as the cylinder head temp will rise off the scale so best be prepaired also have a starten chain just incase then you can atleast have some pull start ya quick on the diesel side.

why do you need gas to start it back up if you stall it? they start right up on the diesel mode if they're warmed up. thats why they have larger starters on the diesel models.

Well lets see here my MD would not restart hot and neither did my 450D start on the diesel side our did my buddys 450 D as it would make about a half turn and the batterys were dead and yes we had good batterys with the correct cables and good starters but ours were not wore out and had comp. and i did stall mine from time to time if i did not grab the crutch fast enough or that darn littel spring would break and not latch it into the low side and when ya let go of the crutch it went back into high and killed it before ya could get the clutch down . The MD we had two group 5 batteryes in it and the 450's had groupe 31's and the charging systems worked fine but they would not start on diesel as my buddy and i would plow together and everyonce in awhile one of us would have a stupid attach and forget to fill the tank and stall it and be staning on the tractor seat looken like and idiot waven your arms so the other could run over and give ya a pull , he stalled his one day while finishen up the headlands and i was just opening up another field and by the time i saw him and got over to give him a pull it was to late as his tractor sat to long and the head temp had already put the temp gauge to the peg and we got it started and before we made three rounds in the next field he was pushen water out the top his head had cracked nothing that back then 640 bucks did not cure for a new head plus the valve job new gskts .

maybe tractors start easier in western ohio than they do in eastern ohio.
