I've been looking for a Cub or Farmall A or B with a belly mower since I will have a lot more to mow at our new house. What I found was a H Farmall with a woods mower,I haven't seen it yet,my son found it.The tractor runs but needs a starter and cosmetics, tires are up and useable but not great. Its in a shed now and it was hard to tell what shape the deck is in or how wide it is.This will be over-kill for what I need but I haven't had much luck finding anything in this area. What should a guy offer for something like this? I only have about 2 acres to mow,and that includes the lawn around the house. I would really like to get this and trade it for a Cub, A or B with a belly mower.John.

Thanks for all of the replies,I talked to my son again tonite and he thought this could be bought for under a grand.Thats less than what the deck should be worth. Looking at it Friday,And NO! I won,t tell you where it is until I've seen it and made a decision on it. John.

I think you will love mowing with an H. I can run through tall grass like it wasn't even there. The old H never knows the difference. But like Rusty said, duck if you go under trees. I run my rear tire pressure on the low side and It never leaves tracks unless it's to wet to be mowing. But hey the ground is pretty hard here in MO anyway.

john, i use a farmall cub with a 59" woods belly mower for the ditches at my farms. i also bought a swisher trailing mower from big r's and hook that up behind the cub. the swisher is basically a mower deck on wheels with its own engine and electric start. the mower will trail behind the tractor or you can telescope the hitch to run along side. i take a 10 ft swath with the cub pulling this. it also works great if you have steep ditches, the tractor stays up and you run the deck down into the ditch. my cub pulls the woods 59 with no problem unless the grass gets really long. keep the blades sharp and the deck adjusted correctly.i run my blades with the back of the blades about 3/8 to 1/2 inch higher than the front. john deere has a handy little plastic measuring device to set the blades. it works great. good luck!

I have an H with a woods 6 foot deck. It works great on flat ground but I don't use it near the house because it it easy to tear up the ground when turning. My riding mower goes in the yard around the house, the H gets the rest.
A good 5-6 foot woods deck is worth more than the H.

I know Hugh can't imagine a Woods 59 on a Cub, but I have one, near Buffalo NY, and it runs it just fine. Sure, when the grass is really growing in the spring you've got to get down in 1st or take a 2/3 of a swath instead of a full pass, but it gets the job done a whole lot faster than the little Simplicity hydro with 42" deck.

Maybe his Super A is getting a little long in the tooth, and may be in need of an engine overhaul, because a Super A is supposed to have twice as much power as a Cub. If only I had a Super A...

Frankly, unless you have a lot of nice flat open ground to mow, I would pass on the H. The H is a nimble little tractor in a 5 acre field, but it's like wrangling a bull in a china shop when you're trying to mow around the house. Forget about getting anywhere near a tree. Your head is 8-9 feet in the air... You'll get knocked off.

Nat: I never suggested the Super A lacked any power, in fact it will give both my 130 and 140 a hard run in 2nd gear pulling my 17 tooth S-tine cultivator. By the way those cultivators require 1.25 to 1.5 hp per tooth. In fact not to long ago I hooked up to an implement that was making a Deere 2355 put out black smoke at about same speed as SA in 3rd gear. I pulled that implement in 3rd gear. Don't think there is much wrong with my SA.

What I did say, was that unless the mower blades were razor sharp the belt and pullies would be hot when done mowing my acre. Now don't come back and tell me my belt is loose, or I will pick you a tune of turkey in the straw on the belt.

Now I will admit I don't mow my grass as often as most folks, and I also have my mower set so blades are 4" off the floor in my shop when in mowing position. I always let my grass get 6-7 inches high before mowing, precisely why I have healthy looking grass always. I am constantly asked by folks why their grass looks poorly. I tell them they would look poorly too if wounded as often as they wound their grass. Besides a 4" lawn will not burn up as quick in dry weather.

John: I have a Super A with a 59 Woods mower. Now I realize you folks in NE probably don't have the grass growth we do here in the east with our 36" annual rainfall. I see guys talking about mowing in 3rd gear with SA, 100, 130, etc. You try that here with the lush growth of grass and your going to see a lot of smoke from the belt. I can't imagine a Cub handling 60" of mower. Unless my mower is razor sharp the belts and pullies of my mower are quite warm by the time I finish my acre. I can mow in second if we're in the middle of a dry spell and the grass is not doing so well. Bear in mind, I do like the Woods mower, I don't think anyone can match them for quality moing.

The second factor I encounter with the Super A is height of tractor as well as operator, around ornamental trees. Depending on direction of travel I scratch either tractor or me, and I break limbs from the trees, a factor I don't like. That will only be worse on an H.

As much as I really don't care for an 8N, I am giving serious consideration into buying one to mount my woods mower on. I grew up never liking an 8N as they had very poor traction and pulling ability. However I believe they probably have a little more pto power than the SA, plus they should be very good around the ornimentals.

There is another factor for me, I don't like my 130 and 140 as well for gardening and would love to put my cultivators back on the SA.

Here is another suggestion, here in Canada we have a Newfy commedy group of folk singers. They have a song out about installing a Chevy 454 in a lawn mower. I loaned the CD to a guy in Detroit, of the 10 or 12 selections, the one that caught his attention was the powerful lawn mower. Since I've got an 86 Buick LeSabre here in the yard, excellent power train, but rusted to crap. Now there is an idea, build a zero turn using a woods mower and V6 power.

John, As much as I really hate to say this, and its only from my personal experience, forget a Cub to mow that much lawn.I parted ways with my Crapsman mower with a 54" deck when I bought my Cub 154 LoBoy with a Ih deck.Thought I was doing good.Well it takes me nearly twice as long to mow the yard, cant make the sharp turns I was use to making, and this is the important part, my wife wont drive it any, maybe not such a bad thing, but she would ride the Sears! The Loboy isnt as fast as the Crapsman, and I cant afford to put the two speed gear box on it. I think you would be better off trying to find you an A or B, but the H might work out well too!

The H should work well for you, unless you need to mow close under some trees. My property is just under 2 acres. I paid something like $1,600 for the outfit, it was running and ready to go to work, but it sure didn't look like it does now.
