I just bought my first Red tractor, a 1940 H. I"ve seen battery box on some and trays on others in pictures on this site. Which did she come with?I think I did well on the price I think...$1300. Has foward lites, tool box under the seat, new tires all around, 12 volt, single hydraulics, narrow front, newer paint, 2 of 3 gauges work, good tin and a pretty good paint job. Runs good but may need a carb job...I"m in love. I needed moore color than just Green here in se Iowa! Let me know about the battery tray/box. Thanks, Randy G. I seen a deere along the side of the road..poor thing, it bled RED

Randy, I went and measured my H's battery box so you would know the size you are dealing with. The box is 7" wide, 9" long and 8.5" high. I think you will find several 12 volt batteries will fit in those deminensions. You don't need a high capacity CCA rating as the starter will turn over like it never has before. With some luck your existing battery might fit within the above deminensions. Good luck, Hal

Welcome Randy to the Red World. I have a 1951 H which I converted from 6 to 12 volt. I bought a regular H battery box and found several 12 volt batteries which would fit in the box. In fact I used some filler material to prevent battery movement within the box. My tractor had a "homemade" tray for the battery when I bought it which was held in place with a rubber bungy cord. You will need a couple of 7/16" square headed bolts about an inch long to mount the box to the brackets. Enjoy your new Farmall. Hal

Yep, a battery box was standard.

If it's got just a tray, one of the previous owners cobbed it on to add the battery or replace a rusted out battery box.

Reproduction battery boxes can be purchased, probably from this site. Just keep in mind that they're pretty small.

The smallest 12V battery I know of is a "Group 26" if I remember correctly. It fits in a Cub battery box with room to spare, so it'll certainly fit in the H's battery box.

Randy, Your "H", had it had lights and starter from the factory, would have had a batter box. If lights and starter were added later, as many of that year were, it is possible that a battery box was not included. Battery boxes would eventually rust and that also could mean that the next battery ended up on a tray rather than in a box. As factory equipment though, having a battery meant a box and lid was installed. They never, to my knowledge, left the factory with a battery on a tray.

As far as I know, all H"s had the smaller battery box, with one end beveled off at the top.
I don"t know if your 12v battery will fit or not. I like my 6v H!
