Hi
I am in the process of rewiring my 1950 C, gonna convert it to 12v. Got all the old wiring off, now I can't tell which is + post on ammeter. Can't read it from the back, can't get ammeter out (without breaking something). So....looking at the back of the ammeter right side up, which post is positive, left or right?
I'm hoping someone will have one sitting on their desk and just pick it up and tell me!

Thanks
Robert

Howdy Robert, I have a amp meter off of a H in my hand right now. It appears to be origional, and never changed out. The part # on the face is 42383-DA. Looking at it from the rear, the left post is -, and right side is +. I think about all letter series Farmalls used the same gauge.

John T has said all that is needed except one item.
If you are using an laternator (not stated in post) the original amp meter is probably too small. I would replace it with a meter that reads about 10% over alternator output (no less than a 50 amp reading in both directions.

Robert, In addition to what KS told you, what I refer to as an ammeters battery SUPPLY side terminal has but ONE wire, and thats to the hot ungrounded battery post, often via a wire to where the big battery cables attaches to a starter switch. The ammeters other LOAD terminal is what feeds loads like lights and ignition PLUS wires to the BAT terminal on a Cutout Relay or a Voltage Regulator, so it may have 2 or more wires.

Nowwwww www, if say an ammeter were originally configured for Positive ground and the tractor got switched to Negative ground, the ammeter leads need to be reversed otherwise it will register bass ackwards.

Just get it wired so if the lights are switched on NOT running she swings to - discharge and then running it swings over to + charge. BUTTTTT have the lights and ignition loads wired on the same ammeter terminal the BAT terminal on a relay or VR is wired also.

Yeah John, you and KS have the solution. I just thought the little beggars were labeled. I have a diagram so I know which wires go together, I just wanted to get it right first crack, what with my luck! So....in my infinite wisdom, I will hook it up opposite to my first thinking and I will be right!!!!! !!!!!
Thanks to all for the help.

Thanks for the addition. I was probably a little to vague with my response.

Just hook it up and turn on the lights, if it shows that it is charging then it's backwards. It won't hurt it.
