I have a 5 ft. Corsicana on my 53 SA, 3point. I have a u-joint at my OR clutch and one at the gear box. Pulls and mows great in first or second gear, third is just too fast for a good cut.

Have you thought about adding a 3-point hitch, to have a 'hog you can raise & lower w/touch control and easily back into tight places? You would need the IH rear fender-mounted rockshaft and a linkage rod to the front touch-control rockshaft as used with the IH cultivators for the SA. A 3-point for the SA is a fairly simple bolt-on collection of pieces, if you have the rear rockshaft (it's a bolt-on also), but I don't know about availablity.
This setup has worked well for me since the 60's, but that old (genuine) "Bush Hog", when lifted completely off the ground, does make the tractor a bit light in the front.

The SA PTO is directly driven from the tractor's transmission, so when using a 'hog, the inertia of the spinning blades also drives the tractor's wheels which means quick stops are not possible, unless the 'hog is equipped with an overrunninig clutch. Without that clutch, some stopping practice in a clear area is a must, else you could run into/over something where you didn't really want to go (pond, ditch, tree, etc.).

You need one that has two wheels in the back and a hand type crank to lift and lower or else you will have to rig a remote valve for your hy system to raise and lower. Remember your pto is off-set thats why it would be a good idea to get one that will work for tow behind type you said you wanted a 5ft will be big enough for a SA. It may be hard to find the type you want.unless you just want for mowing the yard.

gene, I found your post very interesting, but don"t quite understand it. Why would you have to have a hand crank or a remote valve to raise and/or lower a bush hog? My Super A is 3 point and my neighbor has a 5 foot bush hog and he uses my tractor all the time to bush hog his pasture and he just backs up to it, hooks it up, and away he goes. I"ve never used or looked real close at his bush hog, but I think it has a U joint somewhere. I"ll have to investigate a little further.

The HP is around 18. It should handle a 60 inch
mower easily. Hal

Our '50 SA has a model L-59 Woods mounted on it. (The L-59 is a 60".) Works great in 2nd for shorter grass, but we have to go in 1st if we let the grass get too long. The SA will pull in in 3rd, but the belt will get to smoking if the blades are just a little dull. If you have or get a Woods, remember that it is a finish mower, not a "bush-hog". (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
