Just inherited Great-Grandfather's 1945 A. Is the LOUDEST tractor ever! Is quiet and purrs like a kitten when idling - motor fine. Shifts easily and runs down road just fine in all gears. However, when driving, makes loud sound. Say realy fast and loud "rear rear rear rear" and thats what it sounds like (ok, make fun of me, but it really does sound like that!). My other two tractors don't sound anything close to this loud. What should I check? What could it be? Thanks for your help.

Bill - Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to try that tonight. I did something similar to what I think you are suggesting when I pushed in the clutch while going down a slight hill -- the noise pretty much stopped then. I had thought maybe it was wheel bearings or something, but I don't think so now. The tires are the same size but aren't matched perfectly so there is a little wobble. I wonder if that could also be adding to the trouble? Thanks for the suggestion I'll jack it up tonight and turn a wheel. Jeff

Those werent the quietest tractors because of the straight cut gears. Try 140wt in the trans and also the final drive this helps some. If the input bearing is bad in the tranny that can also make noise. I would drain both pans on the final and go to the 140 then drain the tranny and put it in there also. Both that i use on the WMT tractor ride have been changed to 140.

Thanks, Gene. I really appreciatae your advice. I'll get some 140wt tonight and give that a try. I'd really rather not tear everything down right now because it runs so nice other than the loud noise. So, I'll try the 140 wt and see if that doesn't quite it down. I'll do as you suggested and change the oil in both the trans and the final drive. Thanks again -- I really appreciate it. Jeff

More info is needed.
We get the sound, but is it under load, all the time it is in motion, when slowing?
Is it from the front, middle, rear?
is it changing from gear to gear?
does the frequency of each rear change depending only on engine speed?
Help us help you.

Noise is there pretty much all the time it is in motion while going down road. Noise quits when I stop tractor or push in clutch while it is moving. Sound seems to be most from back middle to rear of tractor. Makes same noise in all gears. Thanks for you help.

In order of my feel for likely
1} constant mesh gear set front of trans
2) input shaft bearing
3) vibration at input coupling (easiest to check)
4) countershaft front bearing
5) countershaft rear bearing
6) throwout bearing mount loose (push clutch in to take up freeplay if it quits that is it)
I think that 1,2,4,5,6 require taking top off of trans, or splitting, or both. best of luck,
JimN
