Farmall C- how to remove battery??

I am borrowing a Farmall C from a friend and it is in need of a battery. I want to put in a new one. But- the battery is blocked in on all sides and the fuel tank overhangs the front, preventing it from coming straight up.

It looks to me like the thing to do is to unbolt the tank in order be able to lift the battery straight out. Is this the simplest way?

Thanks to all for the help. It turned out to be very simple- 2 cotter pins on the right side to disconnect a couple shafts and it came right out.

What a great tractor- this thing has been sittong out for a while- looks like crap. New battery, and it started on about the first revolution. Purrs like an electric motor.

Cheers!

LK, I had to replace my Super C's battery a few months ago and I took it out the left side. My SC has a fast hitch which had two hydraulic hoses running along the right side of the battery. Instead of dealing with the hoses all I had to do to remove it out the left side was to disconnect one of the lift all control rods from the reservior and control unit by removing a cotter pin. The choke rod as noted by Hugh was not in the way and was above the battery in that area. I think you will be able to determine which will be easier in your case with a quick look at your tractor. Good Luck and using it for a while you might just have to go get your own as they are really a nice smaller tractor. Hal

Hal: You make good point, a lot depends on mounted attachments. My Farmalls 130 and 140 have fast hitch and the large spring assist almost dictates you rmove the battery to the right. I guess it would be fair to say,"Take the path of least resistance."

LK: gene and Randy may well be right. Super A is the one I'm used to and I always found it quicker to undo the starter pull rod than the choke rod. It may be the C choke rod is above the battery, but I don't think so.

Like Gene, I remove mine from the left side. You need to slide the entire battery box out. A couple of years ago when I put my new battery box it it just wanted to go in from the left. Make sure that you clean the ends to both cables and also where the ground cable fastens to the frame. For the few dollars involved I would replace the battery cables. I had one that looked ok until you looked under the insulation. As Hugh MacKay usually says get 0 or 1 gauge battery cables. I found 1 gauge at a local auto parts store. It spins it over like a top on 6v.

COOL COOL COOL i take them out the other side seemed easier way. Biggest problem is installing the two bolts back in on the top rear of the batt box that helps stabilize the steering post. Got one to change pretty soon.

LK: The Farmall C battery come out the right side. Just unhook the starter pull rod at the starter and slide it back, then uncouple the right hydraulic control rod at lever pivot, tip it up against fuel tank. I like tieing it with a piece of baler twine to fuel cap. From there I'm use to the Super A and with it you have to tie the clutch pedal down. With the C if anything is in the way it will be brake pedals, you may have to unhook pedals at brake activation and let them swing down. It may also slide by brake pedals if they are latched in park brake position. I removed one of these years ago but have forgotten just what I had to do with those brake pedals.

From there two systems were used. I expect on the C two little bolts on each side at base of battery box. Remove those and the whole box will slide out to the right. The newer boxes were two piece and you only have to remove the right side, then battery will slide out.
