Hi guys I have been reading comments on hi crops and cotton pickers and have a question i hope someone will answer. I have a MD that must have been a cotton picker, has flanges or bells on axels and the 1/2 holes on the pedals it does not have serial plate. I have the drops and front wheel assembly and i know the cotton picker worked in reverse, so how do i reverse tractor so i can run it like a high crop? thanks for any help pete

If its still original when you put the drops back on it will run in reverse when in 1st through 5th.There geared drops for cotton picker.

To make the tractor run forward while raised, you must get a reversable top transmission cover. This top has reversed shift rails and the gear shift of the oposite side. It actually has gear shift holes on both sides and is machined for both regular & reverse shift rails. You must flip the differential and install the top, install the bull gears and the tall front wheel, and you are in business. If you are not concerned with excess width you can have the rear wheels dished out if you are concerned about stability. Dished in is the normal setting which gives it a 80 inch tread. Wheel weights will help stability. Be sure and mount the single wheel with the caster toward the rear. If it is mounted as it normally ran under an operational cotton picker it will be hard to steer.

Lots of these tractors were used as high clear spray tractors in the Delta after everyone went to two row pickers.

Harold, sounds like you know about high crops.
Woundering was it the supers that they started puting the drops on cotton picker that were geared so when you removed them the tractor could be used for forward operation and did the regular M use the same chain drop as MV? Thanks

Cotton Picker is right. All of the single row cotton pickers used bull gears which reversed the direction rather than chain driven drop housings which all of the high clear Farmalls used.

Harold you know a lot more about cotton pickers than I ever will but believe you meant to say all early high drum cotton pickers used bull gears and drop boxes. As you know one row low drum and some of the very late one row high drums had straight axles and were reversed by flipping ring gear.

Farmall M's were also using the drop gear boxes. They are different than the V boxes. These were gear driven, no chains.

This is of no help and water over the dam. Last year I ran across a rather unique one row picker at old plantation house near me. It was one of the last one rows built and had PTO belt drive. It was a high drum on sraight axles (no drop boxes) 1943 M with the two hole reverse operation deck top you need. Went back by recently and it was gone along with 2 or 3 2 row pickers and other junk. Found out that owner of place had given all of the old equipment to someone who cut it up and sold it for scrap metal.

You'll have to place an ad on Marketplace on this site as well as other tractor sites and also check with various salvage yards.

You can do what you want to, it's your tractor, but it is somewhat unstable with the single front wheel in reverse or foward. All the ones I own have had the cotton picker attachments taken off.

Again, it's your tractor.
