I have a 51 M & just today it started doing something weird & I need help to figure out what is going on with it? The tractor will start up fine & run good for a little bit & then it will just die. When I try to start it again right away, it will not start up again unless I let it sit for a while, then try again. I did notice some fuel dripping out from the choke lever on the carburator. Can you guys help me out with what the problem may be? Your help is greatly appreciated since I heavily rely on this tractor for feeding cows. Thanks

Another thought occured to me. I don't know where the wiring loom is located on the M, but on our SMTA, it runs across the top of the valve cover and is held by 2 clips under the 2 valve cover bolts. Some time ago, the SMTA was behaving as yours is. Turned out to be the wire feeding the ignition coil was separated inside the wire insulation [inside the loom].This was where the loom was held down at the front valve cover bolt. Whether from heat, flexing, vibration, or whatever,it came apart. It required cutting into the loom & splicing the wire. Never have had any more trouble. When you think you've seen it all, you get a reality check once in a while. Worth checking.

If you have adequate fuel flow, Suspect the condenser[or points]. We have been having lots of trouble with condensers causing troubles such as you describe. Intermittent & mysterious stalling, backfiring, anything you can imagine. I believe that the condensers we are getting now are all imports. If only Filko ignition parts were available again.

When it dies you need to check to see if you still have spark, don't wait 5 minutes to do this but right after it dies. If it has a god blue spark then you porbably have a problem in the carb or the fuel line/tank. If it has spark then pull the drian plug out of the carb to make sure you have a good flow of gas. If you don't then you have a clog or a stuck float/needle. If you have a good flow then you may still have a stuck float or bad float and its flooding.

My local tractor guy said that more than likely it was the coil too. Does anybody have a Napa # to get new coil? It is a 6-volt system.

Any auto parts store should have a new 6 volt coil. Be sure the + plus terminal wire from the coil goes to the distributor if your battery is
+ positive grounded. Hal

If it does end up being a stuck float/needle, can a simple carburetor kit fix this? If so, how easy is it to do for someone like myself that is NOT very mechanically inclined?

Yes a carb kit would probably fix the problem. Instructios are in the kit if its a good one. You should also soak it in carb cleaner and then blow it out with air and also use spray carb cleaner in it to make sure all passages are open.
