Here's a simple one.
I want to replace the battery cables on my H. I'm leaning toward ordering a set of ready made, original style from Brillman, had good results with their spark plug wires and don't want to make them myself. Will require three cables: battery to starter switch, switch to starter, and ground. My H was converted to 12 volt. Does a twelve volt battery have the same size posts as a six-volt? Is there something else I should know? Electricity has always been a weak subject for me.

If you still have any questions, give John Brillman a call and explain exactly what you need. He will know what to send you. 888-274-5562

Battery posts will be the same size, you won't need as heavy a cable for 12 volt as you would for 6

The post sizes are the same on 6 & 12 volt batteries. The positive post is larger the than negative.

Oh, yeah. Negative ground. in reply to williamf, 02-05-2006 06:36:20
And the +and- posts are different sizes, aren't they? Maybe I ought to call and talk to them before I order something. Not my usual style.

A set of cables will include one for grd - & one for the pos + terminal. I would get some measurements from the old cables to see if the new cables will reach. Here's several places that has battery cables. Hal

Though 12v cables "can" be thinner, it is not a good idea. Single"O" (or #0 gauge) wire is far better than the #4 gauge commonly found and called heavy duty. Almost every bit of battery effort will go into the starter with heavy gauge wires. With modest wires comes modest performance.
They will also look more like originals.

If it was my tractor I would make my own cables.
I bought of box of the lead battery terminals used by the military. At one time they allowed
civilian employees to buy from their auctions. I think they may still allow that, but they moved the auction to Ft Meade, that's about 40 miles from me. We could buy used welding cable too,
it makes good battery cables and are very flexible. You would be surprised what the government auction's off. I even bought a complete rebuild kit for the 283 Chevy at one of those auction's. They used the 283 in a lot
military vehicles before switching to diesel. The used the Chrysler 318 too. They used twin Cadillac engines during WW2 in some of their tanks. They used 3 Packard engines in the PT
boats too. These were never used in any of their cars. They had to use aviation gasoline
140 octane. Each engine would develop 1600hp. Hal
