I went to a toy auction near Kitchener ON on Sat. Our son drove down from Toronto to go with me. Our son inlaw came with him, as he was going to look at a car in the area. It was decided since weather was threatening, Duncan would view his prospective car, drive to auction, then he and Sandy would only have to drive from Kitchener to Toronto and I back to Strathroy. And yes we both had damn miserable driving before getting home.

Ah, but I came home with two Farmalls, a 350 and a 1456. They are never going to get grease on me, not going to be any heavy lifting for this old guy, and I'll bet the TA will never give any trouble either.

Auction started off slow, prices increased on average as the day went on. I got my tractors very early in the day, did bid on some others. I got my two for $30. and $45. respectively. A white 1066, supposedly the 5 millionth IH tractor only brought $45. A couple of red 1066s did better. Olivers were the hot tractors yesterday, can't remember any going under $100.

Anyhow I was just about to place my 4th bid on a Deere 8650 when I noticed my good better half standing behind me, she had come with Duncan. I quickly abandoned that $90. bid on the 8650. Luckily the 2nd next item was a set of Farmall M wind chimes. I don't have a Deere this morning, but Marg. has a set of wind chimes. I would like to have had a couple of those Olivers, but at those prices I'll pass.

Sandy picked up a set of Farmall Ms, three tractors sold as a set, M narrow front, M wide front and an MV. He also bought implements.

Hugh - My modest collection of toy tractors (3 altogether) never give me a bit of trouble either. And unlike my 3 "real" tractors, my wife gladly cleans (dusts) them once a week. Whatta deal!

BTW - a friend who lives in Punxatawny has told me "Wiarton Willie" is a fake(!) ...Bob

I have 25 IH toy tractors, but I can't get the wife to dust them. I have to do it and needless to say, it does not happen once a week. But...they sure are a lot less trouble than the 5 full sized ones I have!!

Them's fighting words Bob!....Wiarton Willy is not a fake!...he's just a damned poor weather predictor, irresponsible good for nothing rodent and those are coming from me, you should hear what I have to say 'bout that American rodent down in PA! ( Jes kidd'n)...we paid for the nice weather we had yesterday, hydro was out for over 6 hours, road conditions terrible..went to feed the cattle this morning and drove in about the worst storm we have had all winter, didn't blow snow at the farm because I figured it would drift in about as quick as I blew it, did blow my driveway with the walk behind when I got home..Hugh must have had a nasty drive yesterday, it all started over in the direction he was...Bob can I sell you a groundhog?....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Mike: Actually we had much better driving than you might think. Auction was down to about 35 items at 1:30 pm. Sandy was driving the F-150 with about 1/2 ton of bagged topsoil in back and of course he and Duncan heading for Toronto. Marg. and I on the other hand heading this way with the Buick, were driving right into the storm. We left right then, while Sandy and Duncan stayed to the end. We drove in slush most of the way west on No.7, at Elginfield it improved, 90 kph from there down Petty Drive. Got to 81 and decided to duck down to supermarket in Strathroy. We had driven bare roads since Elginfield. That 1/2 hour we were in the store it must have snowed 3". Wet and packed and slipery. Sure glad we missed that and it was only 8 miles back to Cuddy Drive. We were home by 4:15pm.

Sandy phoned, about 15 min. later and they had driven in slush to Kitchener, then it rained all the way to Toronto. If Marg. and I had waited even another 1/2 hour it wouldn't have been much of a fun drive. I had too much experience with No.7 highway that winter I hauled logs to treat that drive lightly. Remembered what that old gentleman told me at the Middlesex Plowing Match in Lucan summer of 2003. He said, "No. 7 highway was built along the edge of a snowbank one July." I didn't argue.

Mr. Farmall: My Buick is a LeSabre and new enough I leave the wrenching too technicions who know. Most of my wrenching is pre 1965, and tractors only.

Michael - I gotta agree! All those woodchucks (including "Glenn" - a stuffed woodchuck one of the local TV stations dragged out last Thursday) are predicting 6 MORE weeks of winter. But aside from a couple days of snow in mid-December all we've seen is exceptional warmth and seemingly endless clouds and rain. Winter has yet to get started here!

Perhaps we should try "Agua Fria Freddie" - diamond-back rattle snake somewhere in AZ that's supposed to be able to predict winter weather - a try. (He sure couldn't do any worse!!!)

Bob: I'll go along with Willie being a fake. I really don't have much faith in any of those groundhogs, their stats just aren't that good.

And you are right the toys here do get dusted very regularly. But try coming in from the real tractor with grease on your trousers or shirt. Sure gets me in the doghouse, especially if I don't notice it and accidentally brush up against some household fixture.

Bob
I'm not so sure that Willie is a fake, I think he has just been "replaced" several times.

But, I do have it on good authority though, that Shubenacadie Sam correctly predicted the recent storm in Nova Scotia!! I think they feed him some of that good black rum down there!

Robert: I rather doubt any good Nova Scotia black rum ever makes it's way to Sam. Nova Scotians are rather tight fisted when it comes to frivolous use of their black rum. Why it's almost a criminal offence to spill a bit of rum.

I remember a story about a group of guys out hunting. At the end of their hunt they were enjoying a good drink under the warm Oct. sun. One of the guys had set the bottle down beside a stump without the cap on. A few min. later one of the hounds came along lifted his leg and nailed the open bottle dead on. The owner of the dog a banker told me this story. He had a hard job convincing the guys, it shouldn't be death by fireing squad.

Hugh, There"s a lot to be said for the toy models. Like you say, they save on grease, operate on less fuel, take up less shed space, fewer flat tires, and they sure are a lot easier on the old back. In addition to all that, if you feel the need for just one more tractor, and we all go through those pangs, you can get one for a weeks worth of groceries rather than a couple months or couple years wages. By the way, did you see any of the 400"s with cultivators? Our local CNH dealer had one, but couldnt get any more for resale. I drooled a bit, but thats as far as it went. Glad you got to the auction and back home safe and sound. We got between 3 and 4" of heavy, slippery snow last night, and we"re now debating whether we really want to go to Sterling Hts. (Detroit burb) to watch the Super Bowl on "Big Screen" today, or just stay home here in sunny Freeland and not deal with the roads. The more I type, the better my 25" T.V. is looking..... ..Steelers -4.5

Paul: I don't know if you are getting same as we are this am, but out here in the open country side, it's quite a wild day. And yes it is a MI wind, when it all started yesterday it was a Newfy wind. Whatever you do take care, I-75 should be decent drive. Heck they are probably generating enough heat getting the field ready in Detroit, you probably wont even encounter snow south of Flint.

I haven't seen the 400 with cultivators. This auction yesterday mainly the collections of two collectors plus some added consignments. Around 400 items, mixture of probably 1/3 each of tractors, trucks and cars. I was tempted by the 58 Chevy Impalla 2 door hardtop and the 59 Cady Elderado convertable.

The Farmall 350 is a MI tractor, limited edition for a show or function in MI. Has a crest with eagle on top, letters FFA in center with the words agricultural education around it. It was cast by Ertl. Sandy has the sale catalogue as he stayed after I left. That has more detail on the MI connection. Looks to me as though it once was narrow front and someone did a cheap conversion to wide front. I'm going to look at narrow front for it.

The annual auction I go to is coming up the 11th.
I usually get a few items. I collect strickly IH or Case IH. Don't get as many as use to at the auction because I have most of them.
Check out this site duwaauction.com for the ad.
Its hard to keep up with all the new ones coming out all the time. Havein fun Gary.

Gary: I not a big collector as such. I tend to favour the tractors from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I would like to have 3 to 5 of each IH, Deere, Oliver, Cockshutt and Massey. I should have a couple each of Case, AC, MM and Ford including 8N. There was a real nice 8N in that auction on Sat., hadn't sold when I left. I left it with Sandy to decide. He didn't buy it, but he did continue to record most prices in my catalogue. That will give a bit of a guide for future auctions. I understand this same company is having another auction in March. They also had one in Jan. that I didn't attend.
