I am rebuilding an H. I took the Carburetor apart and put it in the carb cleaner and left it for a good long visit. Blew it out. Soaked it in laquer thinner. Blew it out again. Got rebuild kit and rebuilt it. Installed it on the tractor. I have adjusted the float 2 times and in particular as instructed in the directons. The adjustment screw is not responsive...it seems as if I am marginally flooding...I simply cannot figure out what I am doing wrong, have done wrong or failed to do on the rebuild. May I have your suggestions.

After you get the engine running follow this proceedure.
1. With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn"t starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

2. The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM.

3. On the "H" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Aren"t carbs fun!!

Soak it overnight in carburetor cleaner, lacquer thinner won't do a thing for it. Then blow it out with compressed air.

Sorry, misread your 1st sentence where you said you used carb cleaner -- I would soak it again. You can tell whether most of the passages are clean by seeing if you get air out somewhere when blowing it out. I would go easy with the manual cleaning. The problem with the lack of response to the main adjustment is a common one. A new needle and seat should take care of it, provided the passage is clean, IF you can get the old seat out.

It happened to me once when the kit (tisco) had the wrong size needle and seat.

Plain and simple, the carburetor IS NOT CLEAN. The best carb cleaner available is not good enough if you don't know about all of those tiny little passages that need to be manually cleaned out.

Yep, Old's right. If the adjust screws don't do much except for at the extreme ends of their range, then something is still clogged in the body dispite all your good, hard work. Did you pull the jet tube?...or soak it with the tube intact?...or replace the jet tube with one that came in the kit? I got an H at auction and litterally spent hours carving the dirt in and out of the carb before soaking it and hosing it down with cleaner. Had to take it off again cause once on the tractor, it clogged itself up again.

Make sure the fuel tank and lines are clean. Add screen to top of sediment bowl. Use air hose to blow out carb. Make sure air filter not plugged. run it without airfilter hooked up. Still sounds like float adjustment. Make sure gas is fresh. Try Sea Foam in gas to clean carbon deposits. Could be governor linkage.
GLuck.

If the adjustments do little of nothing that means you missed some junk in the carb some place. My self I use spray can type carb cleaner to blow out all the passage ways in a carb. That way you can see that the areas are clean and that still only works 50% of the time and you still have to open them up again.
