I replaced the seals and use gear oil in my steering gearbox and I do not have any leaking. A lot of time when the seals are replaced in the steering gearbox, people do not use tin cylinders to keep the new seals from being cut by the keyways in the shaft.

Mr Farmall: And a lot of folks just didn't have the time to play with that blasted gear box leaking every 5 years, regardless of who or how careful the installer was. I'm talking about commercial use, repairs done by IH technicians and buying these tractors new. I'll bet money that 95% of all Farmalls SA, 100, 130 and 140 leaked oil from the steering box by the time they were 5 years old. The one's that didn't weren't doing anything.

Instead of taking them apart every 5 years, fill them with grease, and yes I know of these tractors that have now gone 40 years and never leaked or been apart, and they damn well weren't doing household yard work. This is not a case of playing around, it's about making money. Every time you take that tractor apart unecessarily it cuts into the bottom line.

Even if your just playing around with a little Farmall, what's the point in playing in the grease and oil if you don't have to.

The "new" seals in my gear box have been in there for 9 years now and no leaks. Even a lot of IH technicians probably did not use tin cylinders in replacing seals in the steering gearbox and other parts of the tractor. One time my dad had his Ford pickup tuned up by Ford technicians and it ran wrose afterward. It turned out they did not gap the spark plugs at all! After that I do not trust dealership "technicians"

I forgot to say that I use my A to mow 6 acres becaue the damn ride-on mowers would wear out all the time and I also use it to pull loads around and it is not some big toy for me. Unlike a lot of people I keep my tractors and my cars in good working order. My late grandfarther was a heavy equipment mechcanic and he taught me how to fix a lot of this stuff and then I taught myself how to fix even the fancy computer stuff in the newer cars, so I know a lot about how to fix equipment abot any age.

Mr. Farmall: Mowing 6 acres of grass and yard work is a mere nothing for one of these tractors. I'm talking 500 hours per year and much harder work than you are doing. And the new tractors did leak by the time they 5 years old, that was a factory assembly. I have a Farmall 140 here that has never leaked, it hasn't seen 500 hours of work in the past 40 years either. Sure they will do fine if you never use them.

I can clearly see where your coming from, quite happy to muck in the oil and grease.

I just reassembled mine and filled it with 80/90 and the gasket leaks. New gasket at that. gonna have to get some material to make a new one as this one is soaked.

mitch: I don't recall my SA taking that much. It's been awhile so I may be forgetting. The main thing is have enough in there, so when new grease is added it must go to the worm and gear. If your using the drain port for the grease zerk, that will force grease up, thus filling around worm and gear very quickly.

mitch: I would add more, a least until you can see it through the top fill port. The whole principle of using grease in that gear box, is have enough in there so when new grease is added it must go to the worm and gear.

It is a common practice, No problem and it keeps the box from leaking everywhere.
The amount may be large, but it does not need to be full to the top. Some expansion space is best. (if you see it in the fill hole I'd quit.
