(Carp is a non-cuss word.)

Thought I had it taken care of -- guess not. Torqued the head properly, then thought I saw one drop of antifreeze in oil.

Got some Bar's head gasket stuff, spent the whole 2 days following the directions, cranked her up, and for the first time, decided to look in the radiator for bubbles -- about one bubble per 10 seconds. Guess the problem I thought was gone is still there.

Might as well get busy. I got to take the head off, have her checked out, get new gaskets, and try again.

I have spent a lot of time and money on this machine, so decided to give her an engagement ring. Might as well -- feel like I am getting all of the other benefits.

The mechanic where we take a lot of our work, routinely adds a tube of Aluma-seal [or Silver-seal] to every engine which he does head/ valve work on. He maintains that any small areas which didn't get coated with gasket maker would be covered. These two products don't clog passages in radiators & engines which are over 1/8". These diesels were prone to the head-crack thing. Hope you come out all right on it.

You could also apply pressure to each cylinder one at a time. Find or make a fitting to screw into spark plug hole and hook air compressor to it. With radiator cap removed, watch for bubbles. This will tell you if it is leaking from one of the cylinders.

If your tractor has wet sleeves the seal at the bottom of the sleeve may be leaking. You could do as Jim suggested and pressurize the radiator.
Remove the oil pan look for any leakage. Hal

My tractor is a 400D, so I guess it doesn't have wet sleeves. I have had that oil pan off 5 times this last year, and finally got a good seal on it. Oh, well.

You should get that head magnafluxed. I think it's cracked when you see bubbles. Those GM diesels made back in the late 70's and early 80's were bad for cracking heads. Hal

Water put into a radiator from the tap, or rainbarrel will have trapped gasses in it. I would be sure it is combustion gasses before tearing out hair. A HC meter on a emissions tester will show what it is made of (your noes is also pretty good)
If it stops after two or three start and warmup cycles it is not broken. A cooling system pressure check at about 6 PSI max, left on for 20 hours will also blow coolant the otherway through a bad gasket/crack. Good luck.

Yes, it was tap water. Will not panic and try several warm-ups. However, if antifreeze is seen in the oil again, I guess the game is over.
