Removed valve cover two small puddles of anti freeze ? Two valve rockers are rock solid until adjusters are backed all the way out, valves do operate. No oil getting to valve cover. No water appears to be in oil ? Any ideas. Just getting started any help would be great. Thanx Doggone.

The IH service manual on valve work shows a possible answer to the no valve clearance problem. The photo shows a valve which looked like half of an egg shell [mushroomed upward] from the valve stem. This condition was caused by incorrect hardening of the valve top. Sooooo if things like this could get by IH quality control, where are we going to be with valves & parts imported from Brazil, China,& wherever??? Hope it's not a cracked head.

We do not know enough to be of tremendous help.
Was the tractor running (probably not)?
Antifreeze cannot get into the valve cover area unless the head is cracked. (it would take being upside down to get coolant to flow that direction)
therefore pulling the head is mandatory. Mark the locations of the coolant, and take pics to show the person who magnifluxes it.
Stuck Lifters require major disassembly to get the cam out of the block, and things cleaned up and measured. Rusty lifters will wipe what is left of the cam shaft lobes where they run.
With the head off, and the block apart why not put in sleeves and pistons, have the crank checked and install new bearings and seals.
A repair manual is needed along with help from others (including us)
Good luck, take pictures all the way so it goes together correctly, and put bolts and parts through holes in cardboard to keep them organized.
Never force a stuck bolt. they are 300 times easier to get out with the head on, than twisted off.

Thanx for your reply. Yes the tractor is running, and the lifters, and valves appear to work, but the rocker arms on two valves have no clearance, and are tight except for when the adjusters are backed all the way out then the rocker arms loosen and I can get clearance. Cracked head ? Would that explain why there is air coming out of a spot on the valve cover where a small part of the gasket is missing ? Why no oil in valve cover? there is a fair amount of sludge build up. I do have a manual and we are planning on tearing it down for a rebuild and your input would be greatly appreiciated thanx Jim hope to hear from you. Doggone

Ahhh. a previous valve job gone wrong will do just that. The valve seat might have been cut/ground too deep, or the valve may have been ground too far and is too small.
If the adjustment is too far out, a interum solution would be to grind off the end of the valve, called but grinding, (caerfully and accurately square and polished) to gain clearance. (never down to the keeper).
Oil is supplied to the rockers through the mounting hardware remove the entire valve rocker assembly, and (using the book) find the passages and clean them With wires if needed.
The crankcase draft tube on the right side of the engine may be plugged. Take it off and clean it in solvent. (pulsing air at a broken gasket is very normal.
Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Thanx guy's it will be a couple days till I can Investigate any further would like to do a commpression test first to see how things are sitting there. Talking with a guy at work thought maybe the valve seat's being soft, and burning unleaded fuel could have taken them out? thanx again I will be back.
