I finished tearing down the 300 (c169) today and as i suspected from the hard knock she had the #1 rod bearig was completly gone. To my suprize when I got the pistons and crank out what do I find to my surprize there is not a mark or scoring grooves ect on the crank or the rod. This motor was ran several hours 10 to 12 at least with this rod knocking. I realize I still have to mic the crank and rod end but i am schocked there is no visable damage. Anyone every see this before. Who knows maybe lady luck is with me.

If you really do get lucky and the rod journal on the crank mics ok AND the inside of the big end of the rod checks out too(do check both) you might have come out pretty good.

But, it might be wise to find out for sure why that happened, especially if all the other bearings are good(I"d check a couple of the others while you have the pan off). I"m not familiar with the oiling system on those engines, but if the crank has drilled oil passages to lubricate the rod bearings like cranks in other engines, you might have something plugging up the oil passage to that journal. The plugged oil passage would be the problem, the wiped out bearing is just a symptom. Better to cure the problem than the sypmtom, or else you"ll get alot of practice changing bearings, and sooner or later it WILL take out the crank and rod.

I will tell you what I have seen people tear down motors with knocks in the front of the motor and have it be the waterpump that was knoking. I have heard of this and done it my self on an M. put her back to gether and use a broom stick or stephascope to see if thats what it is. JON

It definetly was the # 1 rod bearing, you could grab the rod and rattle it around on the crank and when tore down the bearing was not there. With that said it could have a bad water pump as well but the knock was at the rear of the engine

#1 is by the radiator!!
That said, was the shell of the bearing in the rod?
and all the soft material in the pan!!!
Mighty wierd to me.
