240 ute tranny noise

Is it common for a international 240 utility to make a whinning noise when in gear? It does it the worst when in high gear and going down the road. When sitting still, it doesn't make it of course. Thanks for the input. Darin

Mine does the same thing. It is only noticable in high gear.

All older tractors make some noise in the transmission and rear end. It will never be as quiet as a car transmission because of the straight cut gears, but it shouldn't be loud enough to hurt your ears either. I guess I would say that a steady humm is acceptable. It may change a little under load, but it shouldn't really come and go at various intervals, it should be pretty constant. According to some people I have talked to, louder transmissions are caused by mixing new gears with old gears during a rebuild. Because they aren't worn in together, they make a little more noise. Don't know if that is true or not. . .
