I had my starter and generator rebuilt. After hooking everything up and attempting to start, my wires melted. What did I do wrong? This was my grandfathers and he is not with us anymore to help me out and I'm very limited as far as knowledge on what to do.

When I hooked the battery up, the terminal wires began to smoke and the already melted wires started smoking. So yes, I did unhook the battery before I started a fire. The melted wire is coming off the starter button and the button gets hot.

Need to know which wires. Before or after generator came up to voltage? Did it get up to voltage?

Though it is hard to diagnoes by remote, I would check first if the armature and bat connections on the regulator were backwards.
