Every farmer I know switched to detergent oil at least forty years ago and I doubt that this tractor has been running on nondetergent. Do not know best weight but have seen a lot of tractors do a lot of work on straight SAE 30 in the South.

If every farmer you know is still using CaseIH Low Ash 30W, then the joke's on them. It's a NON-detergent oil.

That's my recommendation. Use CaseIH Low Ash SAE 30 if the temperature stays above freezing. We always put SAE 10 in during the winter for easier starts.

Did not know IH (long before New Holland/Case) sold motor oil before I read about it on this forum. Dealer probaly had motor oil but never remember seeing it and never knew of anyone using it.

Nat, if you check the specs on IH low ash oil you will find that it is 10 to 15 percent detergent. That is according to the oil specs and the msds sheets.

Drop the oil pan and clean it out, use 10w30 or 15w40 depending on how hard you use it. Detergent oil will keep the "dirt" in suspension and run it through the filter, keep an eye on the oil, don't let it get real dark.

Straight, non-detergent, 30W...if she hasn't been rebuilt before, DON'T run detergent multi-wt in it. 'Cause it'll break up the sludge, clog some ports, and you'll make more work for yourself when you do the restore.
