Main reason I am having problems with the solenoid is IT AIN'T MADE NO MORE for my 1108996 starter. Got in a new solenoid today and it is in no way compatible, as was the last one. Come to find out that you have to buy a rebuilt starter (#1113034) to get a unit that still has solenoids available. Seems that the early 400Ds had the 1108996 starter, and the latter had a 1113034 starter.

If anyone knows where I can find a NOS solenoid (#1118055), let me know. Otherwise, I am back to fudging the one I have.

The place that I use for all my starter/generator repairs seems to be able to get about anything. He got a new starter motor armature for my 600D- rare because it turns the opposite way of most. Is that part number a Delco number? If you e-mail me I can get the phone # for you if you"d like to try him.

I can remember taking those solenoids apart and rebuilding them, but then they started building them so you could not get them apart without destroying it. Maybe yours is old enough that it will come apart? It's worth a try.

I found an obscure parts place that maintains a database of obsolete parts. I did a search with your part number and it came back with 7 on hand. The bad news is the price $143. Seems like there must be some other options but here is the site if you are running out of ideas:
