My dad owns a 340 utility and we would like to know the year it was made, and try to find the tractors serial number if possible, beacause the serial # plate was cut off by a previous owner. Is there any way i can find out?

Well, my dad bought it at a surplus auction in Southern MN 15 years ago. before that it was believed to be owned maybe by a construction company and quite possibly the state of WI DOT for mowing along highways etc.

Without the original serial number tag, it's just about impossible to find the tractor's true serial number. The only way you have any hope is if you trace the tractor back to its original owner. If the original owner is still alive, he may have the original bill of sale for the tractor, which would have the serial number listed. Your only other chance is if the dealership the tractor came from is still in business, and they keep records from 40+ years ago. They might let you paw through their old archives to find their copy of the bill of sale, but if they do, PLEASE don't anyone else's chances of being able to do the same thing in the future. Be nice about it, put everything back the way you found it, and for God's sake, BUY SOMETHING from these generous folks. You need oil, filters, maybe a new knob for the shift lever...

J.J.: the 340 tractor was only in production from 1958 until 1962, thus it has to be one of those years. You can check engine serial number which should be on a flat machined surface, and stamped rather than cast in place, just under number 1 plug. That will not be the same as tractor serial, but if you can find someone with a close engine serial number, then got to his tractor serial number, it would be close.

You can also go to casting codes, those series of numbers and letters cast in place and having what looks like a blade type round head screw between the digits. It is month and day by number and year by letter or number. By 58, IH may have gone numbers, however if it is letter, A is 55, B is 56, etc. Each casting of the tractor will have it's own casting code date.
