Can I start this thing with out coolant in it?
Just for about 15 or 20 sec. Just to see if its going to fire.

What about starting it with out the valve cover on it?

Kelly, Unless you are planning on entering your tractor in a demolition derby don't do it. The best recipe for a cracked head or block is running it without coolant!

You can run it safely for about 5-10 mintues but thats the max as far as the 10 minutes. That is also an old trick to loosen stuck rings in an engine that has set for a long time. But if you start to see steam comeing out the top hose area its time to shut it off.

won't hurt it without coolant or with the valve cover off, the latter will just make a little mess. just don't run it very long.
