At a minimum you are looking at rings, valve work, gasket set, rod and main inserts. Just don't expect the minimum - it never is.

Depending on you mechanical ability. You can save some money by doing the disassembly and assembly work yourself.

Cae/Ih is always the first place to look for parts, then this site and or value-----bilt. Best thing to do it open the engine up and have a good machine shop do the block and crank and head work and then good from there.

I"ve pulled heads before but never whole block. I"m going to put compression gauge on it before I start, but i think that will only tell condition of ea cylinder, not if it"s valves or rings..... .right?

It helps you figure out what it might be but compression only tell part of the story. Also if its rings and you don't do any thing to the valves they will go bad faster. And if its valves and you fix them but not the rings then the rings will drop out on you soon after doing the valves. Your lucky your working on a cub and a strong man can almost pull the engine on one with out an engine hoist etc. In my day I could do so but thats was years ago and well you know what I'm saying

Well since I'm in Missouri I have no idea of what you have down that way. Up here I use O'reilly's and or Napa. Either place should have/know of a good machine shop. I also know O'reillys can and does have a lot of tractor parts

Have the machine shop obtain the parts. The engine has to be disassembled, cleaned, measured and perhaps machined before parts are ordered.

Where to find a machine shop? Ask for recommendations at several local autoparts stores. They will know best machine shop in your area.
