Farmall H - No Power

I have a Farmall H that has no power. I've verified that the spark plugs and timing are correct. I've also had the carb rebuilt. It starts and runs just fine. However when I go to increase the RPM's with the hand lever, it takes a very long time to rev up.

My initial thought is that there might be something weak in the govener but just don't know what. Could someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Have you checked the valve lash? If one or more cylinders have tight valves, this could affect smooth running.

You said carb just rebuilt! You are not getting enough fuel. I went through this same problem on a "M" that wasn't running because trash/rust from the tank got to the carb. After rebuild, residue trash in the gas line (I forgot to clean out) caused the main needle in the carb to clog again, causing the tractor to run o.k. at idle and bogg down or die under high rpm or a load. Took carb apart recleaned and presto runs fine now. Also follow Wayne Swensons post to get the "sweet spot"

Thanks for all of the information. I've messed around with the carb and timing all day and still have the same result.

I talked to my dad (who owns the tractor)and was filled in on some information. Maybe this will help. He told me that as long as he has owned the tractor, it has never ran right. He used to run alot of hay fields in his day and every H he has ever been on sounds like a "swarm of bees" when it is running right. This one is like a mixture of bees and a JD A. It has a constant POP to it. It doesn't matter if it's idling or running at high rpms. It doesn't matter when I mess with the timing to carb, the POP never stops.

I've checked the compression and each cylinder is running between 65 and 68. I've replaced the spark plugs, condenser, wires, cap and rotor.

The only thing I noticed when I started working on it was the 1 wire was where the 4 wire should have been. Dad had said that the guy that owned it before him had the engine worked on. Could it be possible that the timing could be out since the wiring is off?

One last thing. Dad always had to turn the governer screw up in order to get any kind of power out if it. But doing this, it would never idle.

I really appriciate everyone's comments. I am sure I will get it figured.

Be sure you're getting fuel in the right amounts TO the carburator; we went thru this w/ our '52 H, would idle and run fine but sputter when we needed the power, found the tank discharge nipple (above the filter bulb) full of trash from the tank. Cleaned same; problem gone and she runs fine now. Also could be the air intake "umbrella" could have it's screen blinded over w/ chaff, dust, etc. Pick the "low hanging" fruit first!! Joe Howard

It wouldnt hurt to run a compression check.

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until the engine begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn"t starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.

The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM.
On the "H" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Aren"t carbs fun!!

Possible air intake restriction? Check oilbath air cleaner cup.

FQRQ,

Yes, could be the governor; however, if you have the high speed carb screw set right, set the points first, then pull that timing up afterwards.

Each degree of dwell at the points affects the timing by 3 degrees so if a guy does it in reverse order, it screws that timing up again.

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan

You may have the carb set lean and Hal said and or you could have bad points, condenser, cap or rotor. Any of them can and will cause your problem. But I would start with the carb since thats a freebee

Have you opened the main jet adjusting screw near the bottom of the carburetor? Turn the screw several turns CCW and see if the power improves. Hal
