Farmall SA 2-pt

I have a 53 farmall SA with a 2-pt hitch (arms immediately behind the seat). Also obtained the original cultivators w/ the tractor. My question is, what is the purpose of the two steel levers located immediately to the left of the seat and to the rear of the shifter? I presume something for setting or tripping the cultivator depth but can anyone explain how they work? Thanks in advance for any help!

Cue P.: Nat has nailed it for you, what you have right behind the seat is a rear rockshaft, designed for lifting rear mounted implements. There were 2 different types, both could raise and lower both sides together and the one with the levers, could have each side raised and lowered individually. The main use for this was the 2 way plow as Nat suggests.

Right - We had the 2 way plows and exhaust lift on an A when I was a kid. I have a lot of hours on this machine. The exhaust would lift whichever plow was down, but the exhaust arm would retract when yo let it go. It does not hold the implement up like hydraulics would. The implemnet comes up and the mechanism to the left of the seat behind the shift lever would go over center so it would stay there after the exhaust lift retracts. Then you use the lever to trip whichever plow you desired and let it fall to the ground. There were adjustements for height - and the plow was pulled by a front drawbar coming off the front of the tractor. You adjusted the angle of attack for the plow with the belly lift lever.

Yes, I stand corrected about the term “two point hitch”, I was using it loosely in reference to the lift arms. It does seem logical that the levers could be used to possibly lock one of the arms into position for a plow or one set of cultivators however, I do remember the old farmer I worked for using this tractor to cultivate his garden and he used the levers in addition to the touch-controls when cultivating. Unfortunately, being 16 at the time, I didn’t pay much attention to their use and he’s since passed on. A friend of mine’s 48 SA also has these levers but he isn’t sure of their purpose either (and he’s a vegetable farmer!). The SA repro-owner’s manual I bought does not have the rear lift arms as a described feature. Is there a model # so that I might be able to find a manual somewhere?

Cue P.: That rockshaft will be considered part of the implement rather than part of the tractor. There were 3 - 2 way plows over the years for Farmall A and Super A tractors. The A-87 was designed for the A with hand lift. The A-187 was designed for the A with exhaust lift and the A-189 was designed for the Super A with hydraulic lift.

You find a manual for the A-189 plow and it will contain that rockshaft. If you send me an e mail, I can scan and send you a photo of this lift with the plow mounted. Probably be Mon. before I can do that as I don't think I have it already scanned.

That's not a 2pt hitch. Those are simply the lift arms for any rear-attached implements, such as a plow or the toolbar for the tines that erase your rear wheel tracks when cultivating.

Those levers may not be related to the cultivator. I've seen Super As with cultivators, but never any special levers next to the shifter. Cultivator depth is controlled by the touch-control levers on the steering post.

What you might have is part of a two-way plow, the part which lets you select whether to drop the left or right plow bottom.
