Thanks Allan for the info on index marks. I didn't know that. I ordered service manual today and they said it would take 3 weeks to get here. I am flying by the seat of my pants until then. I was wandering after reading your response if the rockshaft will need replaced. I guess I am asking is this the case more often then not. It is a gamble either way I go but not wanting to do it twice and hate to waste $$$ if rarely needs done. Bushings seem that they would not normally wear out but I do not know any way to tell unless rockshaft is out and mike both surfaces and compare to specs.
ANy thoughts or comments???

You working on the top rock shafts or the torshion bars on the bottom ? if it is the top if you feel a bunch of play then ya need to do something but you will have to remove the top deck or rockshaft housing and tare it down if your working on the torshion bar seals and the tractor does not have a million hours on it more then likely you can get off with just the O/Rings and ya have to pull the PTO and top link plate off and pay attenchion to how the draft sencening linkage sets as you will have to remove the one long arm .

Man you lost me here. The thing i can say for sure is that it is the bottom one. Way down on the bottom under the tractor. Where the 3 point arms are base mounted. and pivot. Top shaft is not a problem.
The thing is I have memories of replacing shaft/ seals on my dads JD 4020 and I know this IH is nothing like that but all I have to work on with no book at this time. You mentioned o-rings. 4020 had actual seals. Does this bottom shaft have o-rings in lieu of seals on bottom. Seals, I would think would be easier and more reliable.
Man I need a book something BADDD.

The top shaft is called the rockshaft. The bottom shaft is known as the torison bar, the draft sensing shaft, or the load control shaft, depending on who you're talking to. IH used o-rings, and you'll see how they seal and why they are way more reliable than Deere's bushing/seal once you get it apart.

Those are O/Rings down there and like i said ya got to pull the PTO and when doing that it is best done with a cherry picker because when you come out with the PTO you must tip the nose of the PTo up and come out slowly so you do not bang the pick up tube on the PTO then ya have to pull the top link bracket this give you access to see the draft sencening lever on the right had side going up to the draft sencening linkage and you must remover that long arm it is bolted to the shaft with a U clamp and ya must take heed on how it is on there . THEn comes the fun part getting the Pins out of the arms if ya don't know the words then most time you will learn new one , now sometime IF the tractor had good care not like the ones i have had to work on they just slide wright out if not then i told ya so the rest is easy one side is just a short end the other is the long shaft and will slide wright out . Other then getting the pins out of the arms it is not hard to do.
