Joe - I've not done what you propose (swap a distributor for a magneto) but you'll probably be happier staying with the distributor for several reasons: 1 - While magnetos are attractive because they don't need battery power to run the engine, they tend to be more trouble-prone - especially on machines that are run infrequently. Mags also seem to be more sensitive to dampness - a real issue if your tractor sits outside. 2 - Unless you can get a working IHC mag for cheap, changing over to is gonna be spendy....like $150 - $200. Also repair parts (caps, points and especially coils) are more expensive. But if you are so inclined, for less than $100 you can install an electronic ignition which will give you hotter ignition than ANY mag or distributor! 3 - The stock distributor ignition - properly adjusted, timed and maintained - provides more than adequate spark for an H. If your's is missing and you are confident the distributor is in good shape, begin looking elsewhere for the high speed miss - wrong or dirty plugs, valves sticking or out of adjustment, carb out of whack, etc.
