I have an IH 2514 with a DT235 diesel engine. It is a 1974, all original. RUNS GREAT. Good power. This fall, it started to blow a little more black smoke than normal. The big thing is that when the govenor kicks in, it blows wet from the exhaust. It is slippery black gunk, but not raw fuel. It smells carbony, not like fuel..but is thin like fuel. It covers the muffler with this black gunk!! Power seems to be the same. Still runs great, too. What could the problem be? Oil ring blown? head? I don't think it is just head gasket...it isn't water...donesn't skip. Any idea?? Please help! thanks.

Sounds like the typical "slobbering" those German IH diesels are known for. Take it out and work the hell out of it, it should improve. Try not to let it idle for more than five minutes at a time.

Might not hurt to see how the air filter looks. Also might check the hoses in the air intake area for problems. They have been known to have an inner ply come loose and cause trouble.

Probably caused by it not being worked very hard. Diesel like to work hard and if they aren't they will start spitting black junk out. Go out and work it hard and it will clear up.

Sounds like the engine may be getting too much fuel. Hal
PS: You didn't mention anything about excessive oil consumption.
