I have a 8 yr old son who loves farmalls, he wants a M for some reason, but I told him when he gets bigger, well I aquired a 48 cub he loves it, I have had him on it a few times with me behind him,, we are going to restore it this winter, my 13 yr old thinks we should do his super major first, but he will wait,, my question is this, I have a 52 cub that has a good rear(from tranny back) the 48 has a weld on the final drive, and needs oil seals and what not, if I was going to swap out the rear ends is t here anything special I will have to worry about once I get her split?I think it should bolt up but I want to be sure first, I think this wouod be the place to ask, otherwise guide me , thanks pat

Thanks guys. I have never had a cub apart so that is definatly some good info, I am going to pick up a book, Just havent yet, I have lots of books but not the cub yet,, I think i may do that just swap out the whole rear end assy, thanks pat, and thanks fo rthe info on the hood, the hood on the 48 is actually pretty mint, but it is good to know, like alot of the other tractors I bought as "spares" they always end up only needing a little to make them good tractors,, my wife still keeps me around tho, haha thanks, pat

You are better off swapping the whole rear end assembly and not do as I did, as I toke the parts out of the original rear end and put them in a different casting (my transmission/differential casting was broke out on the bottom). I spent a lot of time realigning the differental ring and pinion gear including having to purchase some more shims to complete the alignment. If you haven't worked on a Cub before one thing to be careful on is that the drive shaft is one long shaft that runs from the clutch to the back of the transmission and can easily be bent. The splines on my drive shaft were bad so I got a good used one. Turns out the used one was bent, which I assumed was done when they removed the casting between the engine and transmission. Roger

All parts from a '48 and '52 will interchange, with the very minor exception of the hoods. Even they will interchange if the instrument panels are kept with the right tanks.
